Congo Square... featuring Michael Henley (Spacey)

Michael (Spacey) suggested  a cover of this old song by the great Sonny Landreth...
The production is a few years old now, but I reallly like the the way the track sounds...
I like it so much, I'm thinking of writing some new original lyrics... and re-releasing it under a new title... one I won't feel obliged to purchase a licence for, in case I decide to publish... It's just a 3 chord(I/IV/V), 12 bar progression... just like thousands of others...
Is this a good, or bad idea..?

I had a chance to listen to some music here last night and
    was surprised to see this.

I have to admit though...I sure don't remember much about it
and don't remember what I contributed if anything.
I do remember telling Frank I'd like to hear him cover it...and I sure
    did enjoy listening again.

I like the organ "call" form that gets the guitars singing back near the end.

Nice stuff... lots of rich harmony.

Amazing. That guitar playing is absolutely top shelf (I do not say such things lightly). You don't hear that kind of confidence and fluidity every day. I am very impressed. Thanks for sharing.

Hard not to like a song w/a dobro in it. This is at once both familiar and different from much of your normal fare. The one lead is panned left, and then is joined by one panned right at the end. I may vary the tone of one a bit more to make it more unique. Right now they both sound similar to me. But that's minor.

    Hi Frank,

I remember when you originally posted this gem. Great version of a cool tune!

I'm a little conflicted on the re-write idea (you would maybe have to get rid of that cool keyboard line?..which would be a shame) but I'd sure love to hear what you come up with...

I've thought about that Gary... I will have to replace Sonny's sigiture lick with something different there... maybe three girls singing harmony backup lines...  Of course, I'll have to change the melody too...

Most of what you do is most excellent Frank, the rest is good .

Then you go get a man whom not only makes superb guitars, (just cause I am a guardian of a Spacey guitar it in no way makes me biased), but can play most sweetly.
    Nice thanks for sharing

    Thank's for listening Mark...

Michael... you really don't remember playing on this...?
Your way-cool-repeating-hotlicks can be heard during the last verse, and during the slide solo... I wonder if you remember the other project we worked on together... Chick Corea tune...
I believe you suggested that one too...

Thanks mike-mccue... I played that lick on the Wurlitzer EP, and mixed it with the B-3... glad you liked it, but if I do a re-write, I'll have to drop that, and change the melody...

Thanks Beepster - only after several takes and lots of timing edits...

    ...
Frank please except my apology. I don't remember playing on it.
I remember I had a hard time with the "feel" on Spain. I couldn't find the groove...I
remember mentioning that to you when trying to record my take. I haven't heard it since but
figure I blew that one and you trashed my part LOL.

I did listen to CS again last night trying to hear something to trigger my memory...it's just
not there. I did hear something in the last of it coming from the center that I thought may
be me but couldn't tell. Anyway....I believe you LOL.

Maybe we can do something again sometime....personally I'm ready for summer....maybe, Summertime (George Gershwin ) with a little speedier head rockin' attitude?
I can hear you rippin that apart! ( and me forgetting mine LOL)

Michael please... no apology necessary... listening again, your part is virtually buried under 2 acoustic-guitars, 1 Strat, 1 Tele, 2 Wurleys, an acoustic-Piano, a Hammond, 2 slide-guitars, Drums, Congas, Bongos & Bass...
No wonder you can't hear your part... much less remember what you played two or three years ago...
I can hear it though, because I love it, and it's the perfect part, and I'm definitely keepin' it for the re-write...

Summertime... for real... I'll be in touch...

I like the vocal effects. Sound is pretty tight here. Well done. Write a new song Frank, not new lyrics to somebody else's. JMO.

Hey Frank. In all seriouslyness and all joking aside and no jesting, The song is done..

For you to write new lyrics and melody would sort of be like blasfannyfammy or somethin.
    Maybe.

    Maybe not.

thanks chuckebaby... always good to hear from another picker...

Thanks Robby... Dobro is a good thing... I have several resonator guitars, but only one real Dobro dobro, a round neck, steel-body, fiddle-edge, from the 30's... I play it wrong though... bottleneck style...

Thanks Lynn... you are a forum treasure... incredably generous...

Thanks Mike... I'm so glad you listened, and liked...

Thanks a bunch Phil... I'm so glad you, and your girlfriend danced & enjoyed this tune...
BTW... I never said I would use this 3-note melody in the re-write...
This production actually started out as an original song, and was transformed into this Landreth tune after Michael suggusted it... so, in truth... this song is the re-write...  so there you have it...
