Congratulations. It's good to see them getting some good news after the last few months of mostly bad news. Still, I'm sorry to see that it was at the expense of the U.S. team. I didn't see, but it sounds like it was a good game.

Nor did I, but ESPN says Japan won on Penalty kicks at the end of the game.

mike_mccue Did we put up a good fight? I didn't get to see it. best, mike We probably should have won 5-nil, but the girls did everything except finish. Oh well, I guess Japan's name was on the trophy from the beginning!

For the record, I watched all of the U.S. and Japan games from the quarters onward - lots of late game dramatics including the three latest goals ever scored in World Cup history (the 102nd minute goal by Japan over Germany, the 122nd minute goal by the U.S. over Brazil and the 117th minute goal today by Japan over the U.S.). The U.S. penalty kicks today were pathetic.

That was best possible publicity to soccer! I doubt if I've ever seen a game with as many "cliffhangers". Brilliant sport entertainment. The penalty kick failure of the US team sort of climaxed the drama because it really was a gigantic surprise.

Maybe the English (male) team could take note of how our ladies performed in the competition. I won't hold my breath though.

It was a great game to watch Mike - very entertaining and both teams played their hearts out. It's never really satisfactory when a game goes to penalties but Japan certainly looked less 'worried' than the USA when it came to it. Also great to see a game of football where each player wasn't constantly trying to get members of the opposition booked.

The US actually had a few opportunities to win the game...... When it was 1-0 at the 70:00 min mark, they could've gone into a complete defensive mode and used 8-10 players to focus on defending 100% of the time. The US would've had to do this for only 20 minutes and only a fluke or accidental goal from the Japanese would've tied it. This is a strategy that we used regularly (on imporatant games) during my college days to great effects and I'm not sure why the US didn't employ such tactic (especially being in the finals). Even if the Japanese had 5 players attacking, the US would have at least 2 defenders for each Japanese.....but, Kudos and congrats to the Japanese for mentally focussing on getting the job done when it counted!!

I will say that the MVP (most valuable person) for the match had to be the referee. If only all games were as well officiated soccer/football would be far more popular here. I only saw one goof by a linesman (calling that Japanese player offsides). The rest of the time proper football was played. Of course, as Steve mentioned, it helps when both teams are playing fairly and not trying to act injured all the time.
