That was a cool car too, huh Bub?
I'd sure like to ride in back of that one with some chocolate bars! LOL

I should get a free ride in it - I helped pay for the bloody thing

If you paid taxes for 50 years, you'd pay about £40 in your entire working life towards the Royal Family.

Weigh that up against the millions in revenue Britain earns from tourism due to the monarchy, and the countless people employed directly and indirectly by them.

President Cameron anyone?

The Queen herself has a personal fortune estimated to be worth £1,900,000,000 - surely she could afford to give us all back our £40?

And yes, I'd be much happier with a head of state I had some say in electing.

I'd keep the Royal Family as a tourist attraction - I mean really, that's all they are anyway.

Steve, the majority of wealth associated with the Queen is in the form of assets held in trust for the nation. She doesn't have 19 billion in the bank.  Apart from that, The Crown Estate, the royal lands dating back to 1066, generate around £110 million a year which is handed back to the Government in return for a £40 million payment to cover the cost of running the monarchy.

She'd get my vote for sure mate

But I do understand (and completely agree with) all you say - it just seems such an anachronism to be talking of 'princes' and 'commoners' in the twenty first century. I know it's our heritage, but it all sounds so feudal.

But if Bapsi wants to spend his hard-earned dollar over here, I'm sure we're all happy to take it off him.

I think what's wound me up more than anything is the corporate gushing and fawning enthusiasm from the media, in particular the BBC. You can just imagine a TV or Radio presenter having an Andy Gray 'moment' off air after spending the previous hour having to toe the party line!

98.789665% unfunny.

I gather no dolphins were harmed in this attempt at humour though.

Medieval is this years modern.

What got me was the the amount of VW's, Audi's and Mercs in the Royal fleet.  I was surprised that a couple of Messerschmitts and a Heinkel didn't do the fly-past.

Even the Jag's, nice as they are, are badge engineered Tata's these days...
