Connectability

Hello All -
I am not well-versed in the hardware side of things, I'm more better on the software side.  Anyway, I just upgraded to a new Windows 7 Dell PC laptop, SONAR X-1 Studio,  and was prepared to get a new interface because the new laptop does not support FireWire.  The laptop has 2 USB 3.0 connections, 1 USB 2.0 connection, and another combo eSATA/USB (2.0?) connection.
A music store salesperson told me I can get an adapter and still use the M-Audio interface for the time being, he referred to it as a PCMCIA to FireWire adapter but to specify a Texas Instruments chipset.  Sorry, but I don't really know what that is, and when I browsed on-line, it looks like a card, and I don't think I have a card slot.
Can anyone translate?  And I assume I need to install new drivers.  Any help would be most appreciated.  Thanks.

The sales person is correct regarding the TI chipset. Some of the  more recent laptops are now using a mini PCMCIA  card slot so the older cards are too large to fit them. The card has a FW socket in it and simply plugs into the laptop. Watch out for the "combo" cards. The ones that have both FW and USB are not recommended.

The specs of most of these cards will tell you if it has the Texas Instruments chipset. The drivers should be no problem. Win 7 sees and usually automatically loads the right driver when you put a card in. If not the manufacturer also should provide a disk with the card. Even with a driver disk it is best to go to the website and download the most recent driver.
