Consolidating - getting smaller

Hi
For those who know me, I have a pretty large synth collection - as well as guitars (52) and amps (16) and drums (3) and other stuff.

So despite the fact that I am not a keyboard player, I have
Waldorf Wave (big one)
Prophet 5/10/VS
Memorymoog, Voyager
Synthex
Synthi AKS
Roland Super Jupiter MKS 80 + Programmer.
Roland Guitar Synths (I think most of the pre 90s)
Roland JD800, JP 8080, SH101
Oberheim 4 Voice, Xpander
Modcan Modular w about 90 or so modules
ARP 2600/Little Brother, Sequencer
Fizmo
Korg Triton (not vintage) and a couple wavestations (keyboard, rack)
and boxes like the Dave Smith Poly Evolver

I need to conserve space.  I am thinking:
Sythi AKS (no way I would take that out of operation)
Wave (very rare - only 300 made)
and maybe Memorymoog?

What advice would you give?

Mooch is getting married on August 25th. Some of those would make the perfect wedding gift.

I don't have any (worthwhile) advice, but I did just get some drool on myself reading your list of gear.  I was forced to reduce a large amount of gear:

16 guitars and basses down to three (with one guitar still up for sale)
    13 cabs down to three
24 amps and preamps down to four (three pres and one power amp left - keeping these)
12 effects units down to two
    12 synths/samplers down to six

And I must say, I haven't really missed any of the gear that's gone (a few momentary regrets, but that's all).  Good luck!

That's some collection.  If I had any money right now, I'd be tempted to make offers on a few of them.

My suggestion is to sell or donate(I'd imagine a music school can be found) one or two at a time by size until you get to the size reduction you seek.  You might be able to hang on to some of them that way.  I'm guessing the modular takes up a lot of space.  Unless you have a specific use for it, I'd guess that would be the first to go.

There's a forum here with "Gear For Sale".  It might give you better results than e-Bay or Craig's.  At least it should give you an idea what stuff is selling for.

    Good luck.

My advice is to get rid of most of them and get the plugins instead. I had 7 or 8 times that amount of keyboards and modules and have basically got rid of all them now and just kept a few rack mount things.

If you think the plugins cannot replicate those instruments then you are so wrong because they can and it is simple as that! You have just got to let go of the idea that no digital software can do what these instruments do. I was analog as anyone could get and yes at first the plugins were nowhere near the real deal but today that is simply not the case. All your analog stuff can be replaced with plugins and the sound is just fat and fabulous. Maybe keep the Voyager though as it is new enough and still valuable enough to keep. I do not miss any of my analog gear and believe me I had some killer instruments.

I have got PPG wave plugin and it sounds killer. The wavestation plugin in my opinion is better than the keyboard. Any decent sampler will replace the Triton etc.. And not to mention there are killer instruments out there that can do stuff  that none of your gear can even come close to. eg Camel Audio Alchemy, Native Prism, Wusikstation, all the Cakewalk synths are excellent. It just goes on.

I only kept my EMU samplers because I made some great samples myself and I want to keep using them. I have two Kurzweils too which I like but could be replaced at a pinch. There are a heap of fantastic free VST's which also sound killer.

You use much more power running all those real things and they will start to fail and start costing you hefty amounts to keep them going. I sold all my gear and got way more than I paid originally in many cases. The longer you hang onto them the more worthless some of them will become.

If you have got great musical ideas within you you can still get them out and no plugin is going to stop you! You will be putting more strain on your computer and you may have to freeze here and there more often but you can still get the job done.

Hey Spacey. I didn't see his thread before the mixer thread LOL.  If it were me I'd say keep all but romplers. I love the roland JD synths. They are awsesome for guitar guys as they just lay in the track so well unintrusive.  Also I just recently read somewhere that producers love them for the deep low end sound source which can be underlayed beneath tracks to add subtle power.  Keep the memory moog man ,80's status LOL .  Pain in the a$$ but absolutley cool as hell. You know what man... You got some nice synths. You know these boards better than anyone. Nobody can make this decision but you. You need a bigger room in the new house.

A couple I HAVE to keep due to scarcity and their investment value are:
The Wave:  One of the most sensational synths ever built.  They only made 300.  I am on the registry.  It has a knob for everything (which I prefer).  It is a combo wavetable (digital) and analog filters/ADSRs.  Last time I saw one sell it was for over $10k.  I paid a fraction of that for mine a long time ago.

the Synthi AKS.  Totally un musical.  But the best effects machine ever made.

And I have tried the plugins, and they fall way short.

And I am torn on the Linntronics Memorymoog (which fixed all the stuff Moog got wrong) or the Elka Synthex.

    Oh
And I have plug in versions of all but the Wave (which is totally different than the PPG wave) and they are not remotely comparable.

I am also torn on the modular.

Since I have like 10 VCOs and 8 filters and 10 LFOs, 12 ADSRs, delays, frequency shifters, and multiple outs and lord knows what else, it can do awesome stuff like (don't be afraid to sing along)
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=5715468

Or rock and roll like this:
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=5715705

    Or pretty melodic stuff
    http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=5704752

By the way, after patching these, I just walked away and let the synth play itself.
