Control Surface Question

Greetings All,

I'm using Cakewalk's Sonar Platinum on an Acer Laptop PC (16Gb RAM) with a Roland Octa-Capture - a killer combination and everything works wonderfully.

Here's my long question: As a control surface, I'm also using my Roland VS-2480 CD and I have it hooked up through Octa-Capture via MIDI connection and keep in mind that the VS-2480 has 16 physical fader strips.  In Platinum, I've selected the "Cakewalk Generic Surface" as a means for it to receive knob, button, and fader MIDI control data from the VS-2480.  This works perfectly for the 1st 16 strips in Platinum.  However, I'd like to apply same communications to, let's say, tracks/strips 17 through 32.  Is there a way to accomplish this so that I can, for example, control Platinum's strip #1 with VS-2480's Fader #1 and then toggle somehow to also control Platinum's strip #17 using VS-2480's Fader #1, but without it affecting Platinum's strip #1?

God I hope this question makes sense. . .  Any inputs you all can provide is greatly appreciated. . .

Thanks,
R. (evansdaw)

It does make sense .... you want to control a second bank, or multiple banks of track strips.

Unfortunately I can't help because I use an MCU pro which uses a different driver set, but I'm reasonable sure there is a way, and roland support should be better in Cakewalks native system.

The ACT module in Sonar has a setup menu that, once you get the feel for it, works well, I'm just not sure the best way to go about it so that you can hit one control to switch quickly to the next bank in your interface and keep the other settings.
But there is some great people here that will help when they can.

    Good luck!

Wow, that is very interesting.  I have an old VS-1680 and never thought about doing that but it is a cool idea.  Since I have a VS-700, I don't need the VS-1680 function on my main kit, but could see using it with a laptop.

I will be interested to see if anyone can come up with a way to do banks of faders—and I will give it some thought.

    Hey All,

It's me, again.  When I first posted my VS-2480 as Control Surface question, I apparently posted to the wrong forum.  Yet, Fortunately, as it turns out, the person that responded and told me I was in the wrong forum also provide a solution that worked.  Here goes. . . The individual told me to try assigning VS-2480 buttons to the "Move Bank Right" / "Move Bank Left" options, which are located in the "Global Parameters" section of the "Cakewalk Generic Surface" application.  So I assigned VS-2480's locator button #1 to "Move Bank Left" and locator button #2 to "Move Bank Right."  And By Golly, the dang thang worked!!!  With that, I am very happy and very grateful for the info that was provided, in spite of my posting to wrong forum.  What a blessing!  So, thank you, sincerely, whoever you are out there. . .

Agreed, Sacalait! The 2480 sounds awesome! The converters bring a lot of warmth prior to any processing, etc. I still use it to track. I honestly can't believe they've stopped making them. I've had it for a number of years now and it's still ticking! Thanks, R.
