Control Surface for Yamaha 01V 96i mixer...need help setting it up

Hello Folks,
I just picked up the Yamaha 01V 96i mixer and want to enable it in Sonar as a control surface.  I would like to get the faders, pan and transport going, but have failed in my initial attempts.  I tried the CM Labs motor mix control surface but no joy (in a previous post someone said it worked well).  When I go to preferences I try to add it as a new control surface but nothing appears to be added.  The list is empty.  Any ideas?  I'm a noob at this so please explain as if your talking to a child :)

Thanks,

Nick

Update.  Ok, it turns out that if you have the Contour jog wheel at the top of the control surface list ALL other control surfaces with not be displayed.  Once I removed it the list displayed the other control surfaces.  Nice to know, but I still have the same problem.

I have read in previous posts that the 01V96 V1 and V2 mixers can be placed in pro tools mode and then the CM Labs motor mix control surface can be loaded in sonar.  This should allow the user to slide a fader on the board and see it move in sonar and visa versa.  Right?  I tried this and no joy.  It may be that I using the most recent version of this mixer series, the 01V96i.  I have tried to replicate the same steps, but it will not work.

ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE USING THE 01V96i and Sonar X3?????  I need help with this please...

I tried to get the 02R 96 working and failed.
It will respond to HUI (the old PT) format, Sonar does not.
I have a file "Yamaha01v-1.00-beta-4.exe". (can't remember where I got it)
This drops the dll file in the "Shared Surfaces" folder.
Don't know if this supports the 01 "96" version or not, didn't work with the 02R.
If you want the file PM your email address and I'll send it to you.
You can try to search the forum, good luck with that, the link is here (the forum) somewhere.

Not showing up in Preferences? Have you installed the latest drivers for your operating system? If so perhaps uninstall and reinstall them. Also try turning on/connecting the device BEFORE opening Sonar. My keyboard doesn't get detected if I turn it on after opening Sonar. On my system I'll get a little icon in the tray to show a device is connected with little lights that blink when signal is being received. Oh and make sure you are using the correct type of USB port (I'm assuming this is a USB device). Like don't use a USB 1 or 3 port for a USB 2 device and make sure you always use the same port you connected it to while you installed the drivers... aaaaand if you didn't hunt down and follow the installation instructions for it you probably should. Sometimes there is a specific order things need to be done for a successful install.

I'm not familiar with that device though. That's all just general stuff.

Oh and avoid using a USB hub between the unit and the comp. That can cause problems... especially the cheap hubs. Also check your cable to make sure it's not toast. Had that happen with the cable that came with my padKontrol and I thought I had bought a dud.

I have explained this to a few people before too. The mixer may not necessarily be transmitting anything because it has defaulted to OFF and is not sending any fader/encoder movements or anything. Check the manual very varefully for the midi mode settings and make sure the mixer is actually transmitting control moves. Also I think it needs to be told to receive them too before it will do anything in terms of playback.

I use an older 01V with Studio One and it all works perfectly. I had it operating 8.5 Producer as well previously. It is one cool mixer though!! I would love the 01v96i for sure. You might want to invest in those fabulous Neve plugins that can be installed and run inside it too. Rupert actually worked with Yamaha on those plugins and he said in an interesting article I read a while ago they are the best recreations of his hardware he has ever heard!!

Jeff,
The 01 shows up in Control Surfaces, or you run it in Mackie mode?

Re: Control Surface for Yamaha 01V 96i mixer...need help setting it up 2013/12/29 00:36:40 (permalink)
Thank you for the responses...I really appreciate it.  So, I went through the manual and reference manual very carefully over the past two days.  I followed all of the instructions in setting up direct outs for 16 channels into Sonar and have the input/output stuff dialed in.  No problem there.  I then attempted to setup the control surface.  I have read in previous posts to setup the Pro Tools layer on the 01V96i...so I did just that.   The problem is that the 01V96i generates an error message saying that no midi port was detected and that it is going in stand-by mode.  I figured that Sonar was not active so I would get that error until the software was loaded.  So I then loaded the CM Motor Mix control surface in Sonar.  No change.  No response.  So a couple of questions please.

Jeff, how do I check to see if the mixer is sending?  In the midi setup I have enabled the parameters that the Yamaha instruction says needs to be enabled.  I also enabled the Pro Tools layer and in the digital setup I enabled the DAW.  All midi ports point to the USB output which, again, the instruction manual says controls the midi commands for this mixer.

Tom, sure I'll give the DLL you have a shot.  Please email it to me at   Much appreciated!!

Beepster, I made sure to check all the things you pointed out.  Thank you for the tips...

It works with CM Motor Mix,I can use it anytime. You have to assigin 2 from the 8 midi ports of yamaha midi driver.
You have to set midi ports in The CM Motor Mix and in the yamaha itself.
Infact you can use 2 CM Motor Mix to control 16 channel.
You can only control Volume, mute, record arming only so its not that usefull,I use Frointer Tranzport for Transport.
This was found by incidence so its not something that is supported by anyone.
Ye dont forget to put the yamaha in the remote layer.
Peace

Well, I tried the DLL that Tom had and no joy…too bad..I was hoping for an easy solution….

So, maltastudio, I do not understand what you mean when you say,

"You have to assigin 2 from the 8 midi ports of yamaha midi driver.
You have to set midi ports in The CM Motor Mix and in the yamaha itself."

How do I do that?  Can you provide a step by step please?  I know this is basic for most, but I am a complete noob at this stuff...

Thanks,

Nick
