Controlling Pan for a stereo track recording

Hi there, I've been trying for some time to understand how to solve a problem I have.

I want to record one stereo track with my Motu 896HD.
This sound card has a monitoring interface that allows me to control pan individually for each track, but this doesn't have any impact on the actual recording of my stereo track.

For example, in my Motu Cuemix, I set track 1 panned to the right and track 2 panned to the left, but by default Sonar seems to always record track 1 fully panned to the left and track 2 fully panned to the right.

Obviously, this is just an example, and I really want to be able to do more subtle settings like panning 100% left and 60%right and so on...

I cannot find anywhere a way to control input panning to prepare my recording. Am I missing something or is this just not possible?

The only work around I have thought of is to record 2 mono tracks instead of 1 stereo track, but I am not satisfied by this.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer any hints or help.

You can use a mixer in between your sound and the MOTU896 (I use the 896HD too) and get your panning set there and then print it directly to a stereo track in SONAR.

Or you can use the two mono tracks... which is what I would do if I wasn't actually trying to preserve the stereo image.

Of course the most obvious solution is to simply turn your microphone array slightly to the side you want to pan to and leave the level settings matched. That's the traditional way.

In any event, you may want to read up about panning.

Here's a very nice article about panning: http://www.moultonlabs.co..._the_phantom_image/P1/

Thank you Mike for your very quick reply!

I suppose moving the microphones around is the solution that makes more sense!

I thought there would have been a software solution within Sonar to control this sort of thing, but I must be wrong...

Thanks for your link, I'll definitely read it!

    All the best.

A possible software solution would be to insert Channel Tools in the FX bin and use its stereo pan and width controls to move the image around.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Rick,

thanks for your input, I'll give channel tools a shot! This looks like the feature that I couldn't find within Sonar, although this is post recording treatment...

Thumbs up for Channel Tools.  I rarely find a track these days where I am not using this (or its equivalent).

Yes - another +1 for Channel Tools. I find I'm using it more & more on Stereo tracks to get the imaging exactly where I want it.
