Convert soft synth track to audio...how exactly?

I usually use my Roland Fantom to record audio from midi tracks, obviously in real time.  But I'm also using Halion Sonic, and I can't see for the life of me how to 'bounce' this track to an audio track.  I've followed the Help file instructions and nothing gets recorded.
I have a midi track with the notes on, outputting to a Halion Sonic instrument track.  I tried bouncing the first track down and found that was obviously wrong and then tried bouncing down the Halion Sonic track and that made a recording on a separate audio track, but a blank recording.  I've exhausted the permutations here.  What am I doing wrong?

I use Halion Sonic and Fantom X also!

To convert HS. Select both the midi and audio out select range and bounce to new track.

I might be missing the point (not familiar with Sonic, assume it behaves like other VSTi's) Freezing the track bounces the audio down. I normally just use Simple Instrument Tracks, which you can bounce down.

Ah, that's it.  I was selecting one or the other instead of both.  Many thanks.

    Why?
    I hardly ever freeze/bounce VSTis - I don't see the need.

Actually, you've got a good point. I was making the same mistake as the OP. Thanks to both of you for educating me

As I said, I use a Roland Fantom X6 a lot, and if I have some MIDI tracks still playing through my Fantom external workstation then I can only bounce a final mix in real time, and that wastes a lot of time when I create a number of different final mix attempts.  So I like to convert all my MIDI tracks to audio before I mix down, and then I'm only working with audio.

Thats one of the woes of using outboard synths.
