A friend of mine used visit Australia and made a point of flying there on the day before his birthday--just so he would skip that day.  It was convenient time of year for him because it was in the fall here and spring there so he would catch the weather before it got too warm for their summer.

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

So, if you could run around the earth clockwise at the North pole as fast as you can, would you grow younger?

I grow younger just by running around backwards in my living room. It works. Try it.

I'll wait until you clean your living room before I try it.

Hey Bit... I found this while looking at the rivers that feed the Mississippi map... http://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/

Very cool. A treasure-trove of map happiness.

According to this map, Tennessee distinguishes itself by having the most sewage overflows of any state. And I thought they were famous for recording studios.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I'd always thought that Americans drank more coffee than anyone, but a map of coffee consumption shows Canadians to be much more wired than we, and all of North America lags Scandinavia. The largest coffee-producing countries hardly contribute a blip to the data.

Check out the map detailing average age of first sex.  Strange how heavy coffee consumption correlates highly with early loss of virginity.

EDIT:  Talk about getting a lot of bangs for your Starbucks!   [Sorry, just couldn't help myself].

I have started to take more of an interest in maps ever since I was supposed to be at a family reunion in North Eastern Pa. and instead wound up in West Virginia 100 miles off course  with 100 pieces of fried chicken and  four watermelons, the result of faulty GPS instructions due to a programming error. The good news is, there was plenty to eat at the roadside rest area.

I don't trust GPS. My nav unit (named "Mandy" for the voice I selected) has about a 50% success rate in finding places. More than once Mandy has sent me up dead-end roads and private driveways, or announced that I'd reached my destination when in fact I was in a shopping mall parking lot miles away. I'm glad she doesn't take offense easily because I've directed some bad language her way.

Do you have an iPhone?

My friend had to switch to an Adroid phone for the same reasons you're mentioning.  I can't find my way out of a paper bag (even with that helpful arrow that points up) so I really rely on my GPS to work and (so far) it hasn't let me down.

I have an Android phone, but I don't trust it, either. No matter how "smart" my uppity phone thinks it is, it's still a freakin' telephone. And not that great as a telephone, either.

While rummaging around in my drawers awhile back, I found several maps I've had from when I was a kid.
Germany, Europe, some Civil War maps and a "conflict map of Viet-Nam". Relived the 1960s.

Hi,

Very very cool ... and enjoyable look, too!

Went from the maps to all the other collections.  I'd love to have a few of those on my walls to look at all the time.

I find it incredible that people can enter an address into a satnav, look at the map of the destination, select from a choice of routes, see the chosen route displayed, blindly follow it to the end (sometime literaly) and ONLY THEN decide it was routing to the wrong address..  It's not the satnavs fault.

No offense in 10 did.

Re: Cool Maps 2013/08/28 14:07:32 (permalink)
Everything with large grain of salt.  I have used to Mapquest or Maps On Us when travelling to a new city.  The directions were reasonably accurate, but construction caused the ramp I needed to be closed and all bets were off after that.  I imagine that GPS can't account for that, either.  That's one reason I don't have GPS at the moment.

I wonder if anyone knows how often the "maps" get updated.
