Cool Music

hey guys and girls, I just finished putting together some songs and would like your opinions. They are a little rough and not complete yet. Demo 1 has bass guitar loops that I just figured out how to insert.

appreciate all feedback guys

I see a few people hit this thread but no replies. Are the songs that bad?

you know who should listen to your stuff and comment on it is
    Mark ( 6stringat100MPH ). He's a really experienced and talented
shredder type ... and could probably give you a lot of pointers.

demo 1: .. pretty much straight up to me .. i would consider it a song fragment.

Spy Guy: Takes too long to get going ... and ends very abruptly .. i would
approach the arrangement such that it builds interest continuously.

When the Deal is Done: this song needs either vox or a lead guitar on
it. when the drums drop out at 1:22 .. it's pretty abrupt .. and there's
nothing to carry through to the pick up... which is also very abrupt.
again .. the ending just stops ... like somebody hit the stop button...

The mixes sound ok .. the instruments are defined maybe some eq here
    and there.

Thanks for the critique jmarkham. All the songs are in the beginning stage, hope to finish them soon. Will post again when done. You're right about the EQ. I haven't applied that yet. I'm still learning about mixing. I was looking for confirmation if the tracks were at a good level and distinct from each other. Thanks.

Don't worry my friend, the replies will come, this is a lively group.

I like what I hear. All three tunes seem incomplete. Loops waiting to go somewhere. There has to be more song structure. You start off with an intro and you move into the main body of the song, jam some more, maybe have a break or something. But each part of your song should be clearly defined and announced. Just grab any tune that you love and you will hear the different parts.

Overall, what you have now is good listening. So as you build and complete the songs, they can only get better.

since my roommate is sleeping i'm having to check this out through my studio headphones (which have pretty flat response but not much in the bass area).

for demo 1, i second the comments about the riffs needing to go somewhere. as background track to a harley convention this is fine, but as a song it needs to have more than loops. one thing i noticed is that the bass disappears right away. i can't tell about the low bass response but the low-mid and attack of the bass does not seem to really be there after the guitars chime in.

for spy guy, the low tom sounds like it is a bit loose. it doesn't quite fit with the rest of the tones. the hard right guitar seems too background, but not in an intentional way. the hard left guitar less so. maybe some opposite delay on these to give fullness, or an obvious background effect like verb + bandpass (think telephone or a.m. radio type effect). middle guitar is fine.

for when the deal is done, is everything straight up the middle? sure sounds like it. pan the hi-hats at least, and double the guitar left/right. since this mix is sparse, don't do it hard l/r, maybe about 50% either way. drums are very boring, add a fill or two and don't stop them abruptly before the guitar-only parts (or start them abruptly when they come back in). working in stereo will fill out the mix and keep the different instruments from stepping on each other.

all songs ended abruptly, not just musically, but as if someone cut off the song before the reverb died down. leave at least a second of silence after the song to make sure it ends naturally.

i'll try to listen to these again later when i'm not using headphones.
