Copy Clip Automation?

Hi all,

Sonar's documentation says we can copy automation from one clip to another via the "Copy Special..." command, but when I try to follow those instructions, I am prohibited from selecting "Clip Automation" by itself - I'm forced to select "Events in Tracks" too.  Consequently, I can see no way to copy automation from one clip to another.  What am I missing?

I'm using Sonar Platinum v21.2.00 Build 21 - x64.

Any help is appreciated.

Dave

I would like to see the cite for this, the help may need some rewording. It is possible to copy clips along with their automation but it is not possible to copy clip automation from one clip and apply it to a different clip.

Thank you for your prompt response!

Here it is:  http://www.cakewalk.com/D...mation.11.html#1154570.  Notice step #4:  "Choose any other kinds of data you want to copy—if you only want to copy the automation data, choose only Track/Bus Automation and/or Clip Automation."

    I hope this is helpful.

Thanks for the cite. Clip automation is bound to a clip. As I mentioned above, there is no way to copy clip automation from one clip to another. The documentation needs to make that clear.

That is a shame. It would be awesome to have an automation lane which can be copied anywhere (FL Studio anyone?). Let's say i have 1 automation clip for a cutoff knob on synth "A" and i want precisly the same automation on a cutoff on synth "B", it is truly difficult to draw the same automation. Copy/paste (inside a pianoroll for instance) would be awesome. AND it is possible. Assign a CC in your pianoroll to the right knob/parameter and copy/paste THAT data :)

Synth automation as described can be copied. In SONAR, these automation envelops exist at the track level not the clip level.

Agree. This is the case indeed. But as a "workaround", it is possible to lets say copy paste modwheel data from clip to clip. Other CC parameters can be copied/pasted as well. The clip plane does not allow to copy paste this data. And i think that is obvious. Sonar isn't the easiest program to handle this kind of midi editing (yet).

I am not the most technically savvy user, but I wonder if a feature akin to a "MIDI sidechain" might be included as a future feature to address this issue.  (I know that's a different forum, but it's relevant here.)  After inserting the instrument in a track, the user could choose the input from another MIDI track rather than a controller.  A dialog box could filter which events (e.g. automation, controller data, note data, etc.) could be used to selectively determine which elements would be fed to the synth.  It's just a thought.

I'm confused whether you're talking about audio or MIDI clips. With Audio clips that contain clip automation (gain or pan), you can't copy solely the clip automation. MIDI clips don't have "internal" clip automation, they are affected solely by track automation, which as you point out can be copied and pasted via the piano roll or of course, using standard track automation. If you select a MIDI clip, "copy special" it, and choose only automation and not events, you can impose that envelope on another clip.

So is what you want the ability to have MIDI automation within a clip, the same way audio clips have gain and pan, and be able to copy those clip envelopes to other clips independent of track automation?
