Copy Paste Envelope

I am trying to copy a volume envelope from one audio track to another. It should be simple. In fact it has been described in the Sonar Help File under Copy Envelope. But I cant copy any envelopes at all. I know that envelopes sometimes behaves a little funny. Is this just one of these things or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks. If you are referring to Select Track Envelopes With Selected Clips Option it is selected. In the Copy Options everything is checked incl. Track/bus automation just as the manual says.. I still cant find a way to copy.

When you go to Paste, click on the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the Paste window and select the "Track/Bus Automation" option.

Also, make sure that you move the playback cursor to the point where you want the copied envelope segment to be pasted.

If for example, you copy the envelope from measures 20 to 24, but the cursor is sitting at measure 100, it will be pasted at measure 100. So it's possible that you ARE successfully copying the envs, but not where you think you are, and so you'll have envelope data in places where you don't want it.

Also be sure that you select the track that you want to copy to before you do the actual paste.

Also note that (at least through Sonar 7) it is not possible to cleanly copy an envelope segment from one section of a bus to another section of the SAME bus. To do this, you first have to temporarily paste the segment to a track, then copy/cut it again, and then paste it to the bus. Not sure if that's a bug or just a flakey implementation.

I had this problem on Sonar 7 and 8, and it was driving me totally crazy.
If i inserted an instrument using the synth rack, i would not be able to copy/paste any envelopes relating to that device, but if i inserted the instrument directly into the fx bin, i could drag-copy envelopes as long as they had a midi/audio block behind them. I ended up having to use midi nrpn dots in the piano roll view.

It was either Sonar 8.3 or Vista sp2 that finally fixed it for me. Can't remember which.

Make sure you're using the menus to copy & paste, i.e. go Edit > Copy (make your selections), then Edit > Paste (make your selections)

    You CAN'T copy envelopes using Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V

Jose, whenever I've tried using Ctrl+C , the WHOLE of the track, including actual track data as well as all automation data is copied - how are you doing this?

Make sure the right track is selected, then select the area on the timeline that you want to copy, then just push CTRL+C, then CTRL+V.
You can also select an area by clicking on a midi/audio block of the same size, or ALT-dragging across the track view.

    __EDIT__
When you push CTRL+C you should get a popup asking if you want to copy automation, markers, audio data etc. Uncheck what you dont want.

AL already answered your question Bristol.

By the way, I almost sounded like Barack Obama on my previous post ("Yes, you can" :-P).

    Interesting.

The last time I tried Ctrl+C, I didn't get the pop-up, hence why I go through the edit > copy routine.

I'll have to play with this again, could be a real time saver if what you guys are reporting is correct (and I've no reason to believe otherwise).

Edit to add: my method for copying & pasting envelopes was based on 6.2.1 - maybe it's different in 8.3.1?????

I'm trying to copy some automation nodes in an instrument track to a later point in the song and no matter what selections I make in paste>advanced it just moves the original nodes to the paste point rather than copying them.
    What am I missing please?

I'm having the same issue here as maxsax.  This is so frustrating and annoying if you work with soft synths and automation envelopes.  I did some testing and it does not matter if it is an instrument track or not.  Copying the clips with an envelope is super buggy.

This is my number one issue with Sonar. Releaes 8.5 was a great with many improvements, but this has to be the number one thing that needs to be taken care of.

    Please!  Fix.

I contacted support about this. They said use select tool and alt to select nodes from left to right to copy. In my simple test project this usually worked as expected though on one occasion out of 5 tests it didn't.  In real projects just drag selecting nodes with envelope tool copying and pasting can cause all sorts of issues.

I talked with Tech Support and they were able to recreate the problem on their end.  Hopefully this will be fixed in the next patch or release.

Try clone track and effects /automation then delete the content in the track view window , automation for me stays there and is exact where it was on the original track.. unless I delete the whole track ..  know its not the correct way but it works for me in a simple way.. This is why seperate lanes for automation is a must .. how nice would it be to just copy your automation lane to a new tracks lane.. without the said process mentioned above.
