Copying and pasting tracks problem

Hi All.
I am trying to re-arrange a song and am running into an obstacle that I can't figure out. Let's say I want to copy the first 8 measures of tracks 1-8, and paste them to the end of the arrangement at say, measure 34. Two of the 8 tracks are folder tracks with 2 tracks in each folder. I open the folders, slice all of the tracks at the end of measure 8, copy the 1st 8 bars of all of the tracks (Ctrl+C), place my playback head at measure 35, click on track 1, hit Ctrl+V to paste and only 4 of the 8 tracks are copied, and the first starting track is say, track 3 or 4- it's different each time I try it.

I'm used to using GarageBand's Arrange track in the school where I teach, and that makes re-arranging a song effortless. Is there something like that in Sonar that I'm missing? That's another post I guess.

Anyway, it seems like I'm forgetting to set something before I do this mass copy...what am I forgetting to do? Does anyone know?

Thanks in advance,

Charlie

Not sure what would cause this exact issue, but I think the easiest way to copy and paste parts is to select all the parts you want to copy in the timeline, hold down the control key on your keyboard, and then drag all the parts over to where you want to paste them.  Basically just like moving clips + use the control key.  I use that method for copying individual clips and large groups of clips; I also use this method when copying notes in the piano roll, since i always seem to have trouble getting the parts to paste where I want them to go using ctrl+v.  Depends on the situation, but usually helps to have snap to measure enabled when copying groups of clips.

I don't understand why only 4 tracks are pasted, but when copying I do know that you have to make certain the 1st track that you want to copy to actually the selected track. One way to do that is to hit the comma key. Also I don't think that folders behave like tracks. I use track folders but when I copy and paste, I am working with the tracks, not the folders.

I must say that this copy and paste of tracks is the most counter-intuitive process I've ever experienced. I am trying to create arrangement changes...maybe add an extra verse, double the chorus, etc. The drag and drop copy; CTRL+C copy and paste process for this is frustrating me to no end. I'm sorry for the rant, but my deadline got moved up a day, and the client wants the song to be 2' instead of the initially requested 1'. I figured it would be just click, copy, paste...I have now spent 3 hours trying to do this and am no further along than when I started.

I have both midi and audio tracks in this. I have tried freezing the midi tracks to make it consistent. This didn't help. I may have to import all of this into Mixcraft Pro7 in order to make the deadline today.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

I understand how frustrating something new can be. I know you have a deadline but when you get a chance I'd recommend to go through the tutorials. I cut and paste multiple tracks all the time and for me it is quick and easy. There is probably a small step that you are missing. Keep at it! Sonar is worth a little effort to learn... 😊

Here is a link to extensive information on what you want to do. Sonar has lots of options and may not appear intuitive at first. Best to let the manual show you.

I don't understand what's going wrong for you either but I sympathize with your plight. It sucks to have to work with software that you ALMOST understand, but which works differently from what you're used to. I've been mixing with a friend using Logic 9 the past few weeks and it's been long enough ago that I used that that I feel completely handicapped without all my shortcuts and the (for me) quick ergonomics of Sonar.

I hope you stick with it and learn to appreciate it but doing so while under a deadline is probably not helping.

Capturing and posting two screenshots (just after selecting the clips and just after pasting them to the new location) will probably solve the issue immediately.

open the folders, slice all of the tracks at the end of measure 8, copy the 1st 8 bars of all of the tracks (Ctrl+C), place my playback head at measure 35...

    Next time, try this instead:
    - Left-click and sweep through the track numbers and/or Ctrl+click non-adjacent tracks/folders to select the 8 tracks/folders.
    - IMPORTANT - Whichever track you click last (or the first track in a folder) will have focus (track name highlighted) and will be the starting track for the paste. If that isn't the uppermost track of the selection, click that track (not the number) or cursor up to it to give it focus.
    - Left-click and sweep in the timeline with appropriate snap settings to select the region.
    - Click (without sweeping) in the timeline to set your Now time at measure 35.
    - Ctrl+C,V to copy-paste in one go.

    Hey Charlie.
Take special note of what brundlefly has highlighted as important in the post above. When I first switched to Sonar from Cubase many years ago this is the thing  that I found 'counter-intuitive' as you say. Once you get your head around it, it makes good sense:)

Let's say you are copying a section of tracks 1-8  and you want to paste it to the end of tracks 1-8.  I recommend using Paste | Special (Ctrl+Alt+V) so you can set the starting track.  In this case, you would want to start at track 1, but Sonar may default somewhere else.  Also, you want to make sure Paste to One Track is NOT selected..

If you do the Paste Special and look at what's in the box, you may see what's wrong.

I have had a little trouble with Sonar being confused about what tracks I had selected/copied.  I have set up F2 to be Unselect All.  I always hit that first, then go in and Select and Copy so I am sure I am getting what I think I am getting.
