Copyright question

I want to put some of my songs on Acidplanet. When you upload a song there, it asks for copyright information. I have never officially copyrighted any of my music, but what I do is put anything I have written on a CD and mail it to myself via registered mail. Then I leave the envelope sealed. So, my question is, for copyright info on the song, should I just put none? It seems like that's just advertising to anyone who might be a pirate. If I do that, does that invite trouble if someone else wants to steal my music?

FTR.... Once your music is in some tangible form, it is automatically copyrighted. Once that is done, you can then register your copyright with the Library of Congress using either Form PA or SR.

SO.... You would put the year of the copyright (i.e., 2004 or 2005) and your name as the copyright owner.

Hope this helps to clarify some things.

I have never officially copyrighted any of my music, but what I do is put anything I have written on a CD and mail it to myself via registered mail. Then I leave the envelope sealed.

This is referred to as the "Poor Mans Copyright".

And FWIW.... The Courts no longer accept this as legal evidence for proof of ownership/copyright. You will need to register the song copyright with the LOC.
