Core Activity Not Being Shown on New Install?

Hi Gang...

It's still me, Keni finishing this install... All is well but even though I have use multiprocessor selected in the preferences, it is not displaying any processor activity at all...

Any info or thoughts would be a big help even though this is a minor issue...

Thanks...
Keni

It could be that its not enough to move the meters. I often have no activity in the performance module.

Did you also change the value to "2" under the Thread Scheduling Model in the Configuration File? It defaults to "1" which is I think only for dual core machines.

Have you disable core parking and if it's and Intel box, what about Speed Step in the BIOS. Those all can help with performance.

    Thanks John...

That was my suspicion, but I thought you'd see something even if tiny... I have a powerful 8 core (dual quads) and it how's activity as soon as it plays a single wav file...?

No, I didn't do any of these things... I will look into it on my next call there, but in this case, the user's current use is for very small, simple projects... He builds his radio shows and delivers an mp3 of a 4 hour show... Currently using three tracks and very little envelope work for some fades... Not even using any EQ/reverb/etc... I'm hoping to get him using such more as he gets used to X3.. He's been running Sonar 5 since it was released... ;-)

He really liked the new interface and found it far more understandable coming from the land of hardware... ;-)

BTW... I know what core parking is but I don't know what sped step is? Would you mind telling me? ...and are you recommending that it be disabled as well as parking?

You should really change the thread scheduling model regardless. Here's a geek explanation of speedstep:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedStep

I had to disable it when Windows 7 first came out as it caused all kinds of dpc latency spikes on my machine (Gigabyte Mobo from 2006) and made it unusable for audio. Newer machines shouldn't have that problem, but I've found with my current build that it did help. It can only be done in the BIOS, look for CPUEIST and disable it. I think John is right, you're probably not doing enough to get the cores to register.

    Thanks emwhy...

For the moment, the system is working fine for my friend. His minimal needs seem easily covered already but I will look into these other aspects you mention on my next visit there... I'm not sure when that will be as I just spent 3 days there, but.... ;-)
