Costco Deal!
Decided to upgrade from my 5 year old gateway/AMD to a new computer. Saw a Dell computer on Costco online for $1000 bucks, advertised while supplies last. Dell XPS 890, core i7-6700@4Ghz, 2Tb drive, USB3.0, (no firewire-damn, oh well) - Windows 7 (wow yeah!). Just the ticket. Unit comes in - awesome. Guess what - right across from the little core i7 intel sticker is a Waves sticker. Why, it's gotta be a special build for Waves Inc. It's a music computer. I am one lucky bastard! This is a steal of a deal! (It's upgrade able to Windows 10, comes with that disk - but I ain't moving off of Windows 7!)

Ya , stay with W 7. Windows 10 belongs on cell phones and tablets, not DAW's I have it on my office computer now. I'm finding a lot of apps only 4 or 5 years old are not opening right away. You have to click the icon a few times. Then some stupid pop up comes up offering you a better app! It seems to hate any 3rd party software. It wants me to use the included apps. My Canon scanner is now way slow on it. I'm glad my DAW is still on 8.1. It seems way better behaved to me. Costco often has great deals on stuff that you have to grab and run. It will be gone the next day.

SuperG Unit comes in - awesome.
Looks like quite the beast, for not much money. Didn't realize the i7s had reached the 6000's. And 32gb. When will it end.

I had looked at the 8900's, both the Costco version and what is on Dell's site. Sounds like a nice system but after more research I didn't buy it.

This version is very little different from my 2012 XPS 8500. I upgraded mine from 8 GB to 16 GB RAM, and it has an AMD video card instead of nVidia, but it's basically the same machine. What can I say about it? The only mechanical problem I've had with it is the power supply failed once, about 2 years ago. The power supply in the Sony Viao tower I had before the Dell also suffered a power supply failure. Other than that, and replacing the DVD drive with a BD R/W drive, seems pretty much apples vs. apples. And I paid $1600 for mine (with only 8 GB RAM). In May, 2012. At less than $1000? A really good deal. FWIW, Win10 runs great on my XPS 8500. AMD's Win10 driver is still a bit glitchy, but Win10 recovers great, whereas Win7 would have crashed. I'd check for comments as to the nVidia's Win10 driver, but I'd pick one up if my current PC needed replacement.

While it's a good value (I'm seeing $950 on the site for this model right now), I don't think there are any special hardware features that make it a "music" computer. My understanding is the Waves sticker denotes their "MaxxAudio" suite of software-based processors for the integrated audio, including EQ, compression, stereo enhancement, etc. all based on Waves plugin tech. So you're getting tools to improve the built-in audio, but that doesn't mean your DAW will perform better. Someone will please correct me if I'm wrong. Still, good deal for a decent PC, and the Waves stuff can certainly improve the gaming or video-watching experience. Enjoy! Cheers, Eddie

The case is the same as the 8500, that's about that's the same (I think the previous 8300 model also had the same case). They have had two new models since the 8500. The 8700 and now the 8900. The 8700 and 8900 both use different (newer) motherboards and Intel CPU's.

Note: MOTU Ultralite mk3 Hybrid sucx via USB on this machine. Most likely USB3 is as Motu unit is USB2. Ordered Firewire card from Dell - they sent me a PCI card. No can use. Finally ordered PCI-E unit from OfficeMax - Dell wanted more for the proper card. I Let them know their compatibility info on their web site, for the card I ordered is wrong. Hoping like hell the refund my shipping.

Windows 10 has been great on my machine, no major problems at all except the odd weird "glitch," like for instance sometimes I will save an image to a folder but it won't display the thumbnail for a while, just the generic image icon. Never gotten to the bottom of that one. But in terms of all my apps working, I have it on my DAW and my business laptop and everything seems to work great, including Quickbooks (not the latest version), Office 2010 and all that jazz.

I really don't have anything against Windows 10, I'm hearing good things about it. My only halt is that, being a power user, all the 'dangerous' stuff has been buried or hidden. It's like somebody went into your house and rearranged all the furniture and it's impossible to find anything.
