These guitars could easily be better than Gibsons and I own about 6 real ones. The main thing I would worry about is not getting it.

The real bummer is how the "fake" guitars or fear of getting scammed has hurt the used market for authentic instruments.............

Its gotten to a point I'd probably never buy a used "Gibson" anywhere........

Yes, this journey of discovery all started for me a few days ago when I observed a 2003 Hamer with a 1990 serial number???

I don't know what that means but the ebay vendor choose to end his sale and begin a new sale rather than answer my inquiry about the serial number confusion. That just made me more confused so I thought I'd go look around for articles about counterfeit Hamers. I didn't find any, but it seems Gibson are well represented. :-)

People assume that only the big names will get copied... I'm thinking you could sell a lot more mid grade stuff without notice. E.G. a $1200 market value made in USA Hamer might net great profit if you only have a $200 in a very well made copy... and who would ever think it would be a copy.

It got me scratching my head.

    best regards,
    mike

Honestly, if I knew that I could get one of those guitars for under $300 and it was anywhere near as "good" as an Epi (which isn't very good), I'd buy one. You have to spend way more for the Epi and you still have to replace everything on it to get close to a decent guitar. As long as I know what I am buying, it's Gibson's problem not mine.

Exactly. I would never buy a used Shure SM57 or 58 now for the same reason. The person selling it might have bought it new and didn't even know it was a fake or decided to resell it when they figured out it was.  Really sad.

Now, if they started making UA connectors for old EV mics that would be OK. There are no new real ones. That's the stuff they should copy, things you can't get anymore.

I own a real Gibson SG (1969) I bought it used back in 72. It's real. And yes, the real ones play so much better than the knockoffs....and sound better too.

I was in a music store hanging out one day chatting with the owner and a couple of the sales guys and in walks this guy wanting to sell a "Gibson".  He opened the case and it was as fake as fake can be. The logo was actually a picture of the Gibson logo glued on and varnished over. There was no serial number on it.... he acted surprised when we pointed out these obvious faults.

If I wanted a cheap guitar that looked like a brand name,  I'd buy a Squire or an Epi..... at least I know what I'm getting with them.

First, SGs aren't Les Pauls (which are horribly inconsistent) and I believe we are talking about new guitars. I own 3 Epis and they are crap. Basically, they are $500 guitars that you have to spend $300 on to make them decent. The sub $200 Samicks are way better than Chinese or worse Epis at $500+. When you find a good LP it is an awesome thing, but most of them are average at best. I wouldn't order a fake off of the internet, but if I could lay my hands on one and it was decent and $200, I'd buy it.
