Courtney Love on Jay Leno last night

Okay, I was 'schooled' for being hard on some burgeoning and enthusiastic youths trying to sing some song and making a video.  Gotcha.  Was mean and unsupportive.  I have repented and will be nicer to the triers out there (unless they are espousing anarchist, racist or anti-Christ diatribe via their lyricism).

But what about a basic expectation from a signed artist?

Ms. Love was on the Tonight Show (kudos to the new house band there...nice playing!) and she was playing wrong chords on her own material - consistently!  She sang her lyrics fine, from what I could tell (not a stellar vocalist by any standard) but holy cow, a few 1,4,5 majors and 2/6 minors was all she needed to grasp...but didn't.  My condolences on her complete lack of interest regarding her own output.  Now we don't know if she was having a bad day (friend or family sick/death?) or if someone slipped something funny into her green-room water-bottle.  So if this is the case, my sincerest apologies.

Thoughts on what are reasonable 'expectations for/from viewers/concert-goers re signed artists'?

    open season, IMO!

I didn't see her last night - but any signed artist or even public figure is open game, IMO.  whatever they're trying to do in the public spotlight is subject to criticism.  if she played the wrong chords on her own songs then she should not have been playing in a public venue (especially one with an audience like the TS) unless she can take the heat of the criticism.

I do not agree that its open season just because you happen to be an artist and performer. It bothers me that there seems to be no ethics involved regarding the privacy of artists. They put themselves and their egos on the line for our entertainment and deserve a little respect. Nobody is perfect and nobody is "on" everyday.

However, I do agree its open season on Courtney Love. There is only one word to describe her: Gold Digging Skank 'Ho (I even believe she was responsible for Cobain's death). Vile, talentless woman who shames the efforts of real artists.

I agree with that.  notice I said it was open season for "public performances" - not their private lives.

I wasn't listening carefully to what she was playing because i was eating at the time it was shown, but the thing i rememeber was the intro sounded exactly like Lightning Crashes by Live. And that was just 4 hours ago when it was shown here.

Check out my band's song on YouTube!

    Hi,

I can remember over the years that some rock'n'roll and specially some performances were not --- very good --- and sometimes I think we're too enamored with a perfection that in many ways is NOT how the majority of rock music made its name!

    Some of those:
    Rolling Stones
    Sly and the Family Stone
    The Who
    Led Zeppelin
    Nirvana
    Stone Temple Pilots
    Iggy and the Stooges
    The Sex Pistols
    Gong
    Ozric Tentacles
    and probably hundreds of others!

So, I'm kinda curious why we're being critical of something when in essence the very group/family of musicians she came from were about the discordant and dissonant application of a lot of their music?

    Isn't that what made grundge?

I remember Jimmy Page screwed up the Stairway solo so badly at the Atlantic records gig, that they edited it out of a radio rebroadcast. Robert Plant just shrugged it off saying, "Jimmy had a bad night".  Oh well. In the old days rockers used to go for it on stage. Nowadays everything's too carefully choreographed for my tastes (at least for rock and roll).

Some people **** about autotune on the one hand, and then others **** about any imperfection on the other. Sometimes it's even the same people.

Courtney is pretty high on my list of people I wouldn't expect (anything close to) perfection from. I didn't see it, but if she rocked it and it came out wrong, I'd be OK with it. If she was just fumbling around, that's a different thing though...

    Hi Martin -

I didnt watch the performance live -- But I just think I found it on youtube here >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpXGDb44yUA

There are lots of musicians who make good money or are famous who can't play their instrument - Courtney is one of them - In part because - or a huge part - Because of Kurt Cobain

I don't like her music - never been a big fan - and I think she's a crap musician - with more issues that Sport Illustrated  - but I didn't need to see her latest performance - I all ready had my mind made up years ago about that

There was a moment - when in the late 90's where she was at least promising as an actress - she lost some weight - got some plastic surgery and actually looked attractive and did a good job with that Woody Harrelson Movie about Larry Flint - I thought she was good in it  -- and her reviews were great by even people who hated her

so for a minute - I thought that's the direction she was going - but hasn't done anything worth beans since -

and musically to me - shes always been poop

I think the bottom line is it all goes back to what music companies think they can sell - musicianship doesnt mean anything anymore in the pop world - - people who really know their instruments

I think we all know great musicians who are FAN FUC**&&&& TABILOUS who will never be know because - they are not Greg Brady - the Johnny Bravo episode where he got in TV and played his guitar and sang cuz he "fit the jacket"

The days of companies pushing people like Hendrix - Page - -- GONE!

Cortney can sell some music - Cuz of Kurt - so shes still allowed to do it

You want to see real musicianship from some what famous people - you gotta go the Jazz route - and they are only famous if you listen to jazz -- other wise people don't know who your talking about

America and the arts -- it's Corporate America now - Phony Baloney crap products from cars - to music - even new houses are build with crap material now a days

make a buck fast - and easy

I am hoping this Depression the world is in helps change it

Start demanding Quality  from cars - houses - the arts - and everyday products

    That's just my 2 cents

Meaning? She is certainly not an attractive woman (i would put her down as one of Bill's "ugly women"). No talent. No brains. No personality. She would have never made it to the world stage were she not associated with Cobain.

Heck why am I even talking about this "thing"?

    Nevermind and carry on.

    Kurt Cobain died in 1994.

    It's 2010.

Can we stop giving him credit (or blame, as the case may be) for things Courtney is doing?

    Just asking.

    no

cuz No one would give a hoot about Courtney if they were never married - dated or had a kid together - which is why she is still able to sell some CD's - Itunes - or whatever

imagine those two never met -

then people would say - who is Courtney?

and Jay Leno would have had some other musical guest on last night

    just saying

    Hi,

I just find the irony amazing ... not any of us is ever going to discuss her ex's music and autotune or off key in his own work, and how a lot of this music was about the contrast in those areas in the first place.

What made "grundge" good was the fact that many of them were simply telling musicologists and daw experts to take a flying ____ and let them do music. And then to see this said about Courtney who came from there as well, I am inclined to believe that it was done intentionally ... to make a point.

The irony of it all ... judging her by exactly what her music and time and place was not about!

I really find it weird all around and not a comment on you Martin, as I think you were being honest about it and not having motives behind it. But if my name was Courtney, that is NOT the place for her to play music!

I saw Nirvana on TV.... once (not a fan). MTV awards or something. A classic performance where the bass player threw his guitar in the air and missed the catch on its downward gravitational spiral. Cracked him in the face. He hobbled off stage. It was great. Never saw them again except for on YouTube clips.

Overall I have to question why Jay Leno is even featuring Courtney Love? Budget getting low or what?

Kidding of course  but it is uncanny how much you look like him.
