Cover of O Holy Night (full band)
Hey guys! I recorded a full band version of O Holy Night in Sonar recently and would like your feedback on the mix. It's a long song (about 6 minutes) so I understand if you don't want to listen to the whole thing lol. So, at 2:30 the drums and bass come in and at 4:30 the distorted rhythm guitars come in. Hope to hear from you guys. Thanks! -Jon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzWkU6j_hWo

Absolutely beautiful! You've got a great voice. Love those guitars at 4:30!! Great version and well recorded. Your video is quite good too. I know that's not easy to do. I might suggest that since it IS so good, you try to control the lighting a bit more so your face doesn't get so washed out. Fantastic job. Thanks for sharing!

Videography is certainly not my strong suit lol. I'm very much learning as I go - The light was way too close because the wall was right there and didn't have anything to diffuse it with. I was so bummed out after I saw the footage because I am obviously washed out, but I do appreciate your feedback on the song overall. I'm really glad you enjoyed it =]. Thanks again. -Jonathan

Hey if anyone is interested in knowing, all of the guitars were recorded through a Boss GT-8 floor processor. I usually use my Peavey 6505+ half stack, but I was curious to see how the GT-8 would sound. What do you think? -Jonathan

I'm glad I listened to the entire song. The guitar sounds fantastic, as does your voice. What I like about this recording is the dynamic level has a lot of depth. That's not so easy to do in this age of brickwall limiters and volume wars. Very well done. That's not so easy to do in this age of brickwall limiters and volume wars. Very well done. Wow, that is so awesome to hear! I appreciate you letting me know =]. I'm really surprised how well the guitars came out because I usually don't like digital distortion - I'm a tube guy all the way. But it did come out pretty decent though. I'm glad you thought the mix was really dynamic. That's definitely a huge goal of mine when mixing a song. Like you said, since everyone is so obsessed with volume modern mixes definitely lack some dynamics. Don't get me wrong, everyone myself included has to bump up their volume in order to compete, but as you can tell I really don't make it as loud as the typical industry song - dynamics are certainly more important to me. You know what has helped me achieve volume AND dynamics? Throw a limiter on the master bus and bump up the volume before you even start mixing it. Mix into the volume, don't push volume onto a finished mix. I don't know if that's the right way to go about it, but it definitely works for me. =] Thanks for listening! -Jonathan

I really like your rendition of this song. The Boss sounded great. Ive been hearing a lot of old tube amp guys say the same things like," I usually am a tube amp guy ....but". I really can't tell the difference in this application at all. You have a great voice to go along with it all too.

The digital amps and amp simulation programs have definitely made an impression on the industry in the past few years. With proper tweaking they can certainly sound good, but I don't care what anyone says - I'll still choose a Mesa over a Line 6 any day lol. Thanks again! -Jonathan
