[Cover] "Time After Time" feat. Aliciya Angel

Nasty weather here in norCal yesterday, so it was a great day for Alicya and I to throw together another 80s cover song, this one from Cyndi Lauper.  The plan is to finish another house/dance version later this week.

It would be a very nice rendition of one of my favourite songs. BUT! What is that constant thud?! What ever it is, I suggest you get rid of it or tone it way down. It totally detracts from Alicya's fine singing and your orchestration which I very much like.

I'm not really a Cindy Lauper fan, I think Alycia did a better version of the song on the verses. The synths sound perfect. Great recording.

Dave: As I said when I listened from you FB page my favourite Cyndi song, this is a nice cover, look forward to the house mix.  The mix rendered well on both sound systems I listened on.

    Thanks for sharing.

Dave and Aliciya, GREAT JOB!!   i guess the "thud" Malcomb is talking about is the kick.  It actually sounded like it fit in my earphones.  I don't know if I'd say your version  is better because I don't remember hers exactly.  I will say that right now this is my favorite version.  Wonderful job!!

Interesting to read the comments that follow mine and clearly the fault is not yours but my antiquated sound system. I apologise unreservedly. Looks like the Black Hole in my bank account is about to get larger!

Great choice for her voice. I really liked Cyndi's work, but I think Alicya does this song justice. I like her voice quality which gives this mellower version a bit more of a mature production. Nice work!

It's OK, your never going to be better than the original. And you should have given props to the original.

It was ok. Especially consider I haven't seen anyone involved posting replies to anyone here in a while. Just my opinion.

    Best of luck.

Good production and singing. Not a song/era i'm hugely familiar with or excited about, but as ever you add a little airy sparkle. Not quite sure how you're gonna get a house beat on this and make it gel though!!!

Thanks for the replies and I apologize for taking so long to return to the crime scene.  Every time I finish a song, it leaves me a day or two behind in my family/career commitments, so I hope you guys understand.  Anyway, I have to say that I'm very pleasantly surprised at the reactions to this song.  I've always loved it and I think it's a classic, but I was a bit uncertain if others would feel the same.

@malcomb - uh oh, you're gonna hate the house remix!   But, yeah the kick drum is kicking a little more in our version, so take that into account before you go overboard buying new monitors!

@timidi - thanks!  I'm hoping to finish the house version this weekend.

@Robby - I think you really are a Cyndi Lauper fan.  :P  But, yeah, I agree that Aliciya really did a stellar job.

@Wookiee - thanks for the FB comment and I'm glad to hear that it sounds good on several systems.

@radio - Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it!

@Warren - You're far too kind and thanks for the comment on the kick - it's always good to have 2nd, 3rd, 4th,....opinions!

@Tap - I agree that Aliciya's voice does sound a bit mellower and, yeah, she really does steal the show.

@Serious Noize - thanks for listening.  Just to be clear, the point wasn't to try and outdo the original, just to have a little fun on a rainy Sunday.

@Dan - thanks, and yeah, Aliciya is quite a treasure and I'm fortunate to have worked with her all these years!

@mgh - glad you enjoyed it.  TBH, I was sorta surprised at how well the house beat works behind it.  The song is 124 BPM, which is a perfect classic house tempo.  So, I threw a loop behind it just to hear what it would sound like and we looked at each other and said, "ooohhh yeah!"

@thepogue - definitely a classic track and it was a fun side project.  Thanks for listening!

    Hey, Dave,

Amazing job on this great cover!

It's very cool because you and Aliciya were able to put your own stylistic spin on it, while still holding true to the spirit of the original song.

Aliciya's vocals are fantastic, as always, and your performance of the instrumentation is perfectly captured in the pro quality mix.

Geez, I almost hope it rains again this Sunday!

    Nice work!

Great tune and really nice version of it. Lauper takes the credit but it was really written by one of the guys from the Hooters. She stole the credit in return for getting him his first song covered by someone big (big ego I guess). The Hooters version is great. Good choice of material to cover and I like your version more than Laupers.

I disagree with everything said here ^

I've heard several covers of this song that are better than Lauper's.

This is a really fine version, and the mix sounds gorgeous. Excellent.

I'm not going to compare this to the original, though the feel is very much the same.  Personally, I would have liked to have seen more interpertation on the cover, but that may just be me.  In the final analysis- it sounded lovely and was a pleasure to listen to.  What else really matters?

I apologize for the attitude cryophonik, this actually does sound great! This song used to play on the radio when it first come out 24/7, even though it's a great song it used to drive me crazy hearing it all the time, time after time at the time.

Gotta agree with Bobby's (Serious Noize!) original post. It's ok.

It's a very nice rendition but it's missing some key things. You gotta be careful when doing covers of mega hits like this.

The bass is a backing melody line going in to the chorus but it's not here on this version.

Also, there is a guitar part that carries the entire song that's completely missing.

Your version would work with a nice acoustic guitar accompaniment, nothing says you have to be identical to the original, but this is a little empty.

No your wrong, I was being an idiot because I let the song get the best of me because it was one of my ex-girlfriends favorite songs from a better and worse time. Stupid me replied from experience and didn't listen to the song as something new.

I have since listened to the song and I think it sound great!!!

    Ha!!!!

What a difficult and wonderful emulation of this magical song.  Bravos+++++

Covers are my worst nightmare (on so many levels)

IMHO, to accomplish such a beauty is a rare victory, no matter how many helps are available.

... I think, perhaps, my Lauper's version has slightly excess saturation on the lead and keyboard ... and/or excess crispness (5khz+).  Your mix is more real, IOWs.
