Cowboy song.... ( Version-2 w/ tweeks)
Where Does A Cowboy Go? http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12487034 I wrote this some time back and never got around to finishing it. So I threw a vocal on it and here it is. Back in the early days when I gigged for a living, we tended to play lots of honky-tonk hole in the wall places that seemed to attract cowboys and cowgirls. Some were the sidewalk urban cowboys but more then enough knew how to rodeo with the best. I got to know some of them fairly well over the years. The best people you could want to know..... so in a way, this is for them and their indomitable spirits. I hope you enjoy it too..... it's traditional, old style country.

I've met a few cowboys too... one of them even took a shot at me... but that's another story... I don't know where they go, but I could tell you where I told him he could go... I love the song... could be a hit... I would suggest bumping up the vox, and replacing the Ride & Snare with HH & Sidestick during the verses...

Frank.... thanks for popping in for a listen. The vocals boost was an easy fix..... I was thinking they were too low myself, but it was one of those cases of I've been listing to this for a few hours..... and second guessing myself on levels..... anyway, I cranked it 2db or so..... The cowboys I knew where all US Marines on top of the cowboy thing.... hard partying folks... nice to have them as friends in some of the joints we played.... if you catch my drift there. Body guards....

Love the old school take of this song. And yea, the lyrics have hit written on them. Just the right tone to appeal to the cowboy in us all. And love the fiddle - very sweet. My suggestions would be switching the beat on the drums a little bit - it feels to a little mechanical although it gets more interesting later in the song. The only other thing is sometimes the vox is a little too loud - just on a few words and phrases and in the lower registers. Again, that is a tiny thing, nothing major here, move along. @

This is for sure a cowboy song and a good one at that. I have only written one in my life and will have to scroll through some of my old discs and see if I can find it and post it. It's called Fast Train To Texas. It was fun doing it, as you must of had fun doing this one. Very nicely done. Peace and Blessings, John

Sorry, tried to listen but encountered an error? And it didn't seem worth it to try again for some reason? When errors happen, they're usually permanent errors (based on my experience?) so if you could email me your songs? I may be able to listen in the future (assuming there are no errors associated with the mp3s?) :-) BUT! If there are errors? I cannot (in good conscience) guarantee that I will try again. I know this may seem lame? But I wrote a song once a long time ago? "It is what it is..." (classic song BTW) I know I should try again (in my heart of hearts?) But somehow, it's just difficult to get around to it? What with the sock drawer? Vacuuming? Feeding the fish? I'm sure you understand.

Great song. How about less reverb on the drums for a more intimate small room feel. Maybe back off the cymbals a bit too. I have the impression I should be hearing more skin and less effect. The violin might could use some "air" or squeaks or something. Vocal sounds really great. Thanks for sharing. best regards, mike

Tim, Mike & Tony......... The weekends are busy round here...lots of "projects" to do out in the yard and around the house.... so I can't get to the DAW to work on things and adjust them. Suffice it to say I hear the comments and plan to re-do some of the issues mentioned. As I listen I also hear lyric changes that should be made..... so come Monday......... Thanks for listening and commenting.

Mix sounds smoother Herb. I do think the chorus needs developed more. The front line is great but sort of dies after that. (cowboy go, no rodeo) The BIAB steel parts don't seem to lift the chorus the way they should I think (doesn't really lift it). I don't know if you want to work on it further, but, I think it's got great potential if you apply your newer writing/producing skills to the 'song'.

Like Lynn, this is the kind of thing my dad listened to. Work a full day, crack a beer and put something like this on...so this brings back memories of sorts because it sounds so much like that other stuff. After listening to it I thought the cymbal at 3:17 sounded just a little out of place, but then I listened again and it seemed to fit...meh probably neither here nor there. Great song and mix!To someone that doesn't do this, the fact that all the cymbal hits sounded pretty much identical wouldn't be noticed. To me it sounded a little too "canned" for that reason. If you are using midi, maybe even changing velocities a little would help there.

Tim: smoother,,, sounds good... as far as developing it.... probably not. It was an older song that was setting around..... it's time to jump into writing something new..... so stay tuned... Don: open and clear, that's what I aim for. thanks, glad you like it. Robby: did you manage to get in the door to listen.... Miley who? Oh, you mean Beetlejuice's dance partner...that Miley..... Lynn, glad you liked it too. Yeah I grew up with the old troubadours on the radio and the record player too. Champ: side of the pond doesn't matter. I hear that American country music is large over there.... so grab some and have fun. Starise: could be a bit to mechanical (the drums) but I didn't really re-do the drums on this from the original recording at some point in the past..... the vox and the guitars were the only tracks redone for this version. As I said earlier, I was sandbagging on this tune and really only worked on it to get back in the recording swing of things. I had pretty much taken the summer off from music ....for the most part. I hardly turned on the DAW at all and this was my warm up for whatever comes next. I'm thinking another "warm up" tune might be in order first.

Love the steel and fiddle. Some minor pitch issues on the vocals. I agree with notnat about dropping in a sidestick/hat on the verses for some variety in the drum line. Also, an extra fill or two here and there might make the drums sound a bit less vanilla. Overall very nice production and a great song! I liked it quite a bit. Thanks for sharing. :)

I'm really not a Country fan, so I'm not really an authority on the subject, but: I think the drums are a bit loud and upfront. I like the way the steel lines fit between the vocal lines and fill things out. Nice touch. The mix seems really clear. I can hear everything and some good arranging helps it out a lot. The pitch issues someone else mentioned don't bother me in the least. Makes it so much more authentic and real. In fact, I don't think I would have noticed if someone else hadn't pointed it out.
