Crackling Sound during Playback- Soundcard Suggestion

Hi everyone.i have been using sonar x1 for some time now.however during playback the sound sometimes starts cracking and stays like that with fuzzy noises.you can hardly hear anything,it does not happen everytime i playback but still happens alot.i am using hp g70246us laptop with windows 7 32 bit.the laptop is 4 years old and wasnt very expensive when i bought it.the soundcard is default i.e basic smart audio. i dont know too much about it but people told me it is because of the inferior sound card as it is outdated. i am thinking of using an external sound card.can anyone recommend a good quality usb sound card or any other solution.

    Hi,

Have you tried to set the latency higher ? Which driver do you use (ASIO, WDM, MME.. try switching them). If you don't have ASIO, look for a driver called ASIO for all.. (you need to search this for more info - I've not use it, but it works for some here). These alone may solve audio playback issue.

Also check if your notebook processor meets the requirement :
    http://www.cakewalk.com/products/SONAR/X2-Producer/   (bottom page)

Unless you also wanted to do recording.. in that case, keep reading..

Although the term sound card also applies to DAW usage, look for one that is classified under audio interface. A good starting place :

    http://www.sweetwater.com/shop/computer-audio/audio_interfaces/

Almost all items listed that is good to your budget can be used (except the USB 1.1 interfaces and you want to avoid using this, as it gives you only 2 channels max).

Select the USB 2 interfaces for best compatibility :
    http://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Audio_Interfaces

You need to decide how many inputs / outputs you required / with or without MIDI.

Commonly suggested brands : Focusrite, Roland (more to come from others :)..

Select an item or two and come back for discussion. Search for older info with many good advice as this topic pops up from time to time.

Hey. i am using zoom g2 for recording as an audio interface.driver mode is ASIO and input and output drivers are both zoom gseries asio.everything else works just fine. if i download asio4all.will it act like an update for the existing asio drivers..still can a usb sound card erase a problem like this?

    With ref to this
    http://forum.cakewalk.com/onboard-sound-not-working-with-asio-driver-anymore-what-gives-m2858115.aspx

asio4all is just a WDM wrapper (that works better for Sonar).

If you're using the Zoom G2, I believed the output/phone is already good for your audio out ? You should be able to bypass your internal sound card with the existing Zoom ASIO driver, but you have to let the G2 stay connected.

You may have to try if you can install asio4all and switch between your G2 / internal sound card.

I have a few asio drivers and can switch between them (need system shut down first), but only one is active at any time - so I don't think installing asio4all will messed up your Zoom asio.. or better yet, wait for others with experience on this to jump in.

Upgrading to a decent USB sound card will do wonders. If you upgrade to an Firewire card ,then you'll probably need to replace your FireWire card in your laptop as the ones included are mostly $hit.

You also need to make sure you have a dedicated audio drive that spins no less than 7200rpm. Most laptop hard rives spin at 5400rpm and that doesn't meet the minimum requirements to run Sonar.

Right.hard drive spin is 5400 rpm..so i guess i'll just have to change my laptop cause i dont think buying a sound card usb will increase the rpm o 7200.

You need both!! You need a sound card and an external hard drive for your audio only, if you want good performance in Sonar. On-board sound chips are not recommended for use. Its also highly recommemded that you have a separate hard drive for audio only. So you do need both
