Crackling audio on and off in sonar 8

I just pulled up a couple of year old sonar file to remix a song and i'm getting a on and off crackling noise.  At first it did it throughout the whole song.  Now it plays find for a second then it makes the noise for a couple of seconds and then it goes back to normal.  I have a i3 processor with 4 gigs of ram and 250 gig hard drive so i know its not my system.  I also have a m-audio mobilepre usb with the lastest drivers...  plus the file has only 16 audio tracks with minimal effects.  What could be the issue??

Are you running in ASIO or WDM driver mode (Options-Audio-Advanced)? If WDM, run the Wave Profiler so it sets the options properly for the card.

Try moving the latency slider in Options-Audio to the right and see if it goes away. If you have the latency set lower than the soundcard can handle, it will make noise.

Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make sure only the M-Audio drivers are selected for input and output.

What version of Windows? Unless you're running 64 bit Vista or 64-bit Windows 7, you can only use up to 3GB of the 4GB you have installed.

yes i am running the asio drivers with the m audio drivers the only one selected.  I am running windows 7 64 bit but running the 32 bit version of sonar.  I tried all the usual stuff but none of it seems 2 be helping.
