Sorry, this should probably belong in the Coffee House, but since it started here...

One thing that surprised me was how he said you couldn't be successful sounding like someone else, etc.  Isn't that one of the "success formulas" for making it big?  Taxi.com has industry listings all the time that ask for "groups that sound similar to (flavor of the month here)".

    Thoughts?

Lead the parade, follow the parade or watch the parade!

I agree following is "one" of the ways to be successful, and usually much easier than leading but to do that you generally have to sell your soul (sell out). I think the industry pulls those strings a little too much. Many artists (solo & group) have likely had their "true voice/sound" removed because the label told them they had to sound more like "put big name leaders here"!

Ultimately it's the public that loses! They only get to hear one or two sounds for anywhere from 3 years to an entire decade! Just how many different versions of "Pearl Jam" did we have to put up with in the 90's and 2000's. I have nothing against Pearl Jam, but I really did not want to here yet "another" band (dozens) with that same formula.

IMO - Artists want to lead, but the business likes to capitalize by following/copying. In fairness most big business works like this. Company A adds lime to their beer and within a few months Company B, C, D, etc... follow.

Your right, this would be a great coffee house topic! I would love to hear other opinions on this one!

I couldn't agree more!  Pearl Jam was exactly what I was thinking about, too.  I actually like that band, but I like variety!

    Live performance baby ;)

This is where the fakes will loose-

One key i to do something with your instrument live where it is obvious that there is no way it is being faked, i.e. "milly vanilly'd"

Funny thing is, I talk to people not knowing about it much, just what they like ,etc. and when I tear apart artists they love, explaining they probably cannot remotely do that autotuned voice live (which half the time they dont realize they sound that way because they are tuned).

I have done major shows all over the U.S. and Europe on big television shows, etc. and seen the great amount of fake artists out there that simply cannot come close to their recording live.

Live shows are going to sell indie records. Im about to put my record out and test that theory with a prett dang cool live show, in which at least the vocals will be completely live (well the lead...

Gotta  have a video too... so true and so easy to accomplish these days-=

I will report with results :)
