Crapple....

We live in a small town where pretty much everyone wants the cheapest of anything. We finally upgraded from Blackberry Pearl phones to iPhone 5 last July, will be eligible for an upgrade next July (2 years AT&T). When we were there ALL they had were 16G phones. I have NO songs on my phone, I don't have many photos, they go to Dropbox and iCloud so I delete them regularly. I have a little bit of IK stuff, Garageband, no songs stored... very few games, some weather apps, ESPN, just basic stuff. I went today to update to ios 8. I get a message that I need 4.6G of free space to install it. Give me a break!!!
I am going BACK to the AT&T store and try to get them to work with me but I also am "grandfathered" into an unlimited data plan that they HATE and would love to get me out of so I a guessing I am stuck with this. I may just buy a 64G iP 6 and set this 5 up for my grand daughter.
How on earth am I supposed to get down to 4.6G free space? It says I have 2.1G available and have used 11.2G where did the rest of the 16G go?
Crapple!

Do the upgrade using iTunes on your computer. It will use the space on you computer to extract the file and load it on your phone. That worked for me, I only had 2G of space left on mine.

Stop buying contract phones I suggest. Buy the phone outright and get a sim card. Insure the phone yourself if necessary
I know in the US choices are quite slim (almost zero competition) but there must be SIM only deals... Save money and be free...

An unlocked phone is REALLY expensive if you want a new one... and I don't want to lose that unlimited data plan. Though, I may end up doing just that if they push me.

Thanks, I will do that if I can figure it out. I really am a caveman. I just updated iTunes and iCloud for Windows.

    Hi Jbow

As an Apple Certified Trainer, my advice would be to update to iOS 8 when a number of months have passed.  This allows some time for any teething issues to be fixed and for app developers to update their products.

Unfortunately Apple no longer support the option to roll back to previous iOS versions.  There are of course 'unofficial' ways to do this but will void the warranty on your device, so not ideal.

Also, Makeshift is correct, updating via iTunes is a better way to update rather than via the device.

    Hope this helps.

Too late... It is done, using iTunes. I haven't tried much but everything seems fine. I set up iCloud Drive on my computer and phone.
Do you know if there is a way to use the cloud to increase my usable space? I am down to a little under 2G of space on my phone but I have about 22G on iCloud.
I guess I'm asking if the cloud space is usable or just for storage. Sometimes I am reluctant to delete all my photos, I guess they all go to the cloud and the box. If I buy the iTunes sync will I have access to all my albums that are in iTunes but not on my phone... but then through my phone? I'm thinking that what I'm going to need is a 32 or 64 G phone but I thought I'd ask if the cloud is good for anything other than storage?

    Thanks!

I hardly bother with the cloud. Just sync photos via USB cable to move your phone data to your computer's hard drive.

Buy an external hard drive to back up your computer as and use something like acronis 2015 if it is a PC (plenty of alternatives as well) that way your Sonar data gets backed up as well...

I am about to buy a HD dock and Acronis, I'll get a separate smaller HD for this. I just sent payment for a new Studiocat PRO Mid Tower. Good idea.

    Julien,

All my Apps seem to work fine. I've got a 32gb iPad and is almost depleted of space as well. I like to do scratch takes of my song writes on it and that burns up storage fast. Most of what's on my iPhone is music and photos. I back up photos to the computer and rotate music on iTunes by checking or u checking the sync boxes. It's also good to connect to iTunes every so often to do a complete back up of the phone.

    Re: Crapple.... 2014/09/19 08:38:32 (permalink)
I've read a couple of articles which advise against updating to iOS 8 if you have a 4S or earlier model. It requires processing power that the 4S just doesn't have, uses more memory and its UI has been designed for larger screen sizes. My girlfriend updated (even though she's just about to get a new phone) and regretted it - apparently her battery life is now terrible and apps are very slow to open. Having said that, I've read comments under these articles from people who say they updated their 4S's and are having zero problems. It seems these OS updates affect different users in different ways.

I'm holding out for the 6 Plus, but as is typical with AT&T, their trade-in deal makes no sense. They are touting $200 credit if you bring in your old phone in good condition (which mine is). However, you have to bring your phone in by Sept 30th according to the woman I spoke to...but the 6 Plus is not shipping until November. Which means that if I want to take advantage of this deal, I'd be without a phone for over a month. Obviously, nobody is going to go with that "deal." It's ill thought out, ridiculous and a kick in the face to people like me who have been loyal to them for over a decade. The girlfriend also had a similar deal with Verizon, but they capitulated and extended the deadline to return phones for trade ins so that 6 Plus customers could take advantage. I don't see any signs of AT&T doing that yet.

They do have some kind of frequent upgrade plan now called AT&T Plus or something, in which you pay an extra monthly fee ($40 I think) and get a phone upgrade every year. I can't work out if it's worth it or not. Probably not.

Some things don't work with ios 8. IK APPs do not seem to be updated to work with 8 but they do work, they wont work with Audiobus. I have another APP Guitar Tone from Sonoma Wireworks. It just automatically closes after a quick message about not connecting with Audiobus. I deleted Audiobus but all my APPs still give me a message about not connection with Audiobus, except GarageBand, it works with Audiobus. I thought that deleting Audiobus would resolve things until IK gets around to updating but it is as if it is still there. Most APPs just disable Audiobus but Guitar Tone just closes. It is actually still open but minimized, in other words, if I press the front button twice, the app is still running, if I open it, it crashes again. I restarted but it as if Audiobus is still there. I guess I will get Audiobus back from the cloud and just not use Amplitude with it until they update. I'll try to contact Sonoma to see what is up with their APP.
IOS 8 enables every APPs notifications, you need to go in and manually disable them again. I'm not sure about the Cloud Drive if you use a Mac. It seems to work with the Cloud Drive for windows but I don't think it will work with a Mac until the release of their new Mac OS.

Oh well, maybe I should have waited but I didn't. My phone is a 5 so maybe everything will be OK.

    Thanks,
