Crazy little tune from this week

Here is a strange little tune that I recorded using a 1999 Telecaster, Old Fender Twin, and Laney Pro Tube amp. I used some retro keyboard patches. Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

I don't find it strange at all.

Not my cuppa tea, but its is good.

And you can play, my friend.

Guitar tone is sick!!! Got an Eric Johnson feel to it!!! I like the song!!!

Thanks a lot!  I really appreciate it.

These are real drums recorded by Harry Stinson and Chuck Ainlay. I am using Toontrack "Music City" drums. It is like 30 or 40 gigs of real drum samples. Maybe I just need to tweak the mics, eq, compression, and velocity.

What do you think would make it sound better?

Not sure!! I have toontrack also so maybe that's how I recognized it was a drummer "in the box" so to speak!!! As a drummer, it's easy for me to tell real from programmed or loops/samples. Have no clue why but seems I can.

My first impression is there is no depth/body to the drums... They just sound kinda weak...Maybe a bit of verb on them...Snare doesn't sound real to me... That's me though....Sounds like a midi produced sound. Not even a sampled sound...

    Cool,

I messed with the drums a little. Is this any better or worse?  Click the above link again!

    Thanks!

Sounds like they are more out front with a bit more punch!!! All in all the song is exceptional. The great thing about writing and recording is you can change things.

    Cool,

Do you have any examples or links to some really great drum songs or sounds that you are talking about? Maybe, I can try to match it or get an idea of what I am doing wrong. I went through the drums in piano roll and manually changed the velocity of almost every drum fill, crash, snare, and kick. Superior drummer does it, but sometimes it doesn't do it enough.

    Hi Michael,

I just took a listen to this. It sounds really good. Great guitar playing. I wish I could get my drums to sound that good.

Don't really hear anything bad that sticks out about the mix.

    Michael,
You aren't doing anything wrong!!! Sound and tone is subjective! LOL! If you like the sound of the drums, you have achieved success!!! I can give you ideas of what I consider great drum sounds but that would be my taste or preference. Might not be yours. Some of my favorite drums sounds come from guys like Simon Phillips, Virgil Donati, Dave Weckl, Ian Paice, John Bonham... more of a bombastic sound!!!
    Peace!!

Very creative guitar piece.  I love the Tele tones.  The little keyboard touches worked very well to make it broad and add color.
Bass and drums sound great too......very nice mix indeed.

Hi Michael, somehow thought this would make a great theme tune for a Miami Vice like cop-show, like it.

Thanks Guys! I really appreciate your nice comments.

Wow, those Simon Phillips drums sound super great and so do the drums on the other songs. I totally see what you mean. My drums sound like a joke compared to his sound.  It sounds like sticks of dynamite going off. Now, I need to figure out how to get my Superior Drummer to do it. I have a lot of great plug-ins, so I might be able to pull it off. I am pretty good at getting decent guitar tones, but have never tried to copy or match drum tones. I don't have any outboard gear. Everything is in the box. Do you guys have any ideas?

I was wondering, do you treat each drum different or compress and put reverb on everything? I was thinking that the cymbals may sound strange with a lot of compression. I don't know much about it.

This doesn't sound strange at all to me.  It does, however, sound darn good.  Your playing is great, the changes are very creative, and the keyboard interjections really add a lot.  Sure wish I could get drum loops to sound like that.
    Nice one!!

    Thanks a lot!

I am going to stack a few tracks of drums on top of each other then run them to a buss so I can control all of them. This should produce a huge sound. I hope!

    Cool Thanks!

I just stacked 4 tracks of drums on top of each other. I hope this will fix the weak drum sound. It might have made it worse, but I hope not! The snare is cracking pretty good and the bass is thumping better.

I worked on the drums again today. Does this sound decent? There is much more dynamics now.

Great playing and very well put together track. A lot of work must have gone into this and your efforts are well rewarded with an excellent instrumental.

Drums and guitar work particularly good.

That is something very unique there!  Being a huge Steve Morse/Dixie Dregs/Eric Johnson fan, I couldn't help but hear some of that in there.  What was interesting is the use of the synth in there and I really got a violin vibe (ala Mark Wood) in some spots.  A very nicely done piece of work and very appealing to my ears.  Great job and a fun ride!
