Critique Please
Hey, Please have a listen to "I've Been Cryin'" at the top of my Sound Click link and critique the sound if you don't mind. It's not completed yet, but I'd like to know your thoughts on it. Thanks! Donny

Very nice groove. I enjoyed the guitar and bass line very much. It's a groove i would emphasize by boosting the drums a bit with more presence. The vocals sounded really good.

I thought this sounded good--nice harmonies and lead guitar especially.

Hey, Thanks for the comments folks. I wrote this 17 years ago and I don't particularly like the lyrics during the verses, but that's what they are at the moment. +1 for bringing up the drums a little bit. As far as the mix of the bass and drums...do those seem to be in the ballpark? When comparing on my system to commercial mixes, it seems to compare well to my ears. I was comparing to some recent music from Prince and Michael McDonald. I've got just a *tad* of high frequency exciter and volume maximizer on it, both from my iZotope.

Don, I can't give a good estimation of mix as my set up is mono right now. I'm in the stone age here. One thing i would take time with is eq in the drums. I would experiment and get the fattest sound i could (if that's what you want) without booming it. I'll be listening.

This is pretty good. The bass & drums are upfront in my headphones.... the Santana sounding guitar is sweet. The vox & harmonies are good... Can't wait to hear the finished song.

The lead does have that Carlos feel to it. Can't go wrong with that. Keep at it. Ron

Sounds excellent on headphones here. Careful with the punchiness-enhancers and exciters. I always take any 'tad' two notches down anyway, for good measure. On normal levels you don't always immediately appreciate what it can mess up, have to turn it up and A/B. Again, great stuff.

Thanks people! I really feel like I'm learning ALOT....I've got my room acoustics more under control and I'm applying some compression techniques that I've never used before...

Mix sounds good here. I might try a little syncopated Hammond or CP-70 to bring the genre home.
