Critique/suggestions requested on drum mix

Hello everyone, this is my first post!

I have finally taken the plunge into DAW (Sonar 6 PE) after retiring my old Alesis ADAT equipment. While waiting for my equipment to arrive, I’ve been lurking around the forum here for the last week and I am blown away by the wealth of information here and the size of the Cakewalk community! I‘m glad to “officially” be a part of the family now :)

My main purpose for this new DAW studio is to record drum tracks for various projects where a person sends me a scratch track of their song with click and/or tempo and I send back 8 WAV tracks of drums for them to add into their project and mix however they like.

I recorded my first drum test last night and have been messing around with the mix and getting used to Sonar. I would love some feedback/critique on how the mix sounds so far – remember, I’m a drummer so I LOVE to hear a kick drum that you can also feel… which means it may be over the top for the average listener.

Click here to listen <- THIS SAMPLE IS OLD & OBSOLETE... NEW SAMPLE IS POSTED FURTHER DOWN IN THIS THREAD

Here are the mic’s I used running through a MOTU 8pre:

  • Kick drum (no hole in resonant head): Audix D-6 placed 6” from resonant head, and about 3” off-center.
  • Snare drum: Audix i5
  • Toms 1: Audix D-2
  • Toms 2: Audix D-2
  • Floor Toms: Audix D-4
  • Overheads: 2 Rode NT5 in XY pattern 6ft from floor (2ft above highest point of drum kit)
  • Room Mic: AKG C4000B 6ft away from drums

Thanks for your input!

I really like the openness from the toms and the overall sound of the kit doesn't sound bad but, and that would be a really big but (no pun intended, I think),the ring of the snare and the funky overtone of the kick is really going to get in the way come mix time.

I would definitely cut a hole in the kick head and try cutting a ring out of an old drum head to put on the snare unless you already have a store bought one. After that there's always tape.

IvonAge, thanks for the feedback. You raise a great point about the kick overtones in a mix with other instruments... I just picked up a second resonant head for the kick so I can have one with the hole and one without depending on what I'm recording.

I'm going to try some test tracks with the mic through the hole and go for a snappier kick with less overtone and decay. I had a couple small strips of duct tape on the snare head and had taken them off to try and get a more open sound but I'll need to find a comprise to lessen the ring.

I'd love to hear this but I get 'the current playlist has no valid files in it..' etc.

Not sure how to get around that, shame.

    Hi James,

I'm wondering if my server was down temporarily when you tried?
Anyway, here's a direct link to the m3u and mp3 files:
    DrumSample.m3u
    DrumSample.mp3

See if either of those links might work for you. Thanks!

I agree 100%. The sound of the kick might be ok for certain styles but at some point you will definitely want more of the beater click and you need a hole in the front head to get that. Cutting a hole isn't that difficult. Take a coffee can or something about 6-8" in diameter and trace around it. Then cut it out. Remo heads come with an adhesive ring that you simply stick to the front of the head and then you use an Exacto knife to cut away the inner part of the ring. The ring prevents damage to the hole when sticking a mic in there. My local drum shop sold me on something called a fallom patch (or something like that) for the beater side. It's made of kevlar material and extends the life of the beater head and adds a little more clickiness to the sound which is great. It just sticks right to the beater head where the beaters make contact with the head.

And I also used an old cut up snare drum to make those dampers. Cut them about an inch wide and varying lengths in a circular pattern and then simply duct tape the ends to the top of the snare near the rim. Pick the length that sounds the best. That will cut down on the ring. Otherwise, excellent job! Good luck and welcome aboard.

btw: putting the mic inside the kick serves another useful purpose - it reduces the bleed from the overhead cymbals.

Okay, I finally got around to messing with mix to try and notch out some of the ring of the snare and also added a gate on the kick to reduce the decay. I got rid of the reverb so the ambient sound is courtesy of the room mic (I don't know what I was thinking adding that much reverb to the first mix!). Let me know if this sounds any better than the first mix. I'm having fun learning Sonar... :)

There you go. That sounds great. Nice sounding room.

Looking forward to hearing those drums with some music.

Looks like your a lefty, cool. Don't see that to often or at least I don't.

Forgot to mention that it's really cool to see that there are still a few real drummers around here. Myself, I don't care for the midi drum thing. I guess if that's all you've got then it's all you got but there's nothing like the real thing when it comes to music.

    Peace

definitely sounds better than v1. It's hard to tell as I'm listening on small computer speakers, but I think you might have taken a little too much off the snare. It sounds a bit boxy to me now. maybe just a bit more back in the upper range and a little off the bottom? Otherwise it sounds pretty good.

BTW, how do you like the 8pre?

Hey Rich, thanks for the feedback.

I have made some adjustments since posting this sample. I am now using a resonant head with a hole on the kick drum so I can get the mic about 6" away from the batter head and offset about 4". This has really helped with better kick definition in terms of punch and click. I have also nixed the room mic in favor of using a mic on the hi-hat just to give a bit more presence than what the overheads are capturing.

Here's a recent sample for comparison: Drum Sample (Funky Groove)
I have some more samples on my site if interested: http://www.michaelsharps.com

I LOVE my 8pre. So far it has worked like a charm!

    Hey Michael,

sounds pretty good. I'm guessing you used the 8pre on those examples off your site as well?

I did what you're doing. Might have to email you once I get finished demoing a couple of my tunes. I would definitely want some live drums on these tracks...
