Cubase AI4 ate my Sonar

I had a free version of Cubase AI4 included with a Korg synth I purchased, so, on a lark, I decided to install it.

VERY BIG MISTAKE

After the install, Sonar crashed , Plug ins crashed, my Focusrite Saffire and VRM would not play together anymore.

I attempted an uninstall of CRAPBASE , but that did not fix the problem.

I performed a restore from a few weeks ago, and now I am laboriously reinstalling some plug ins i purchased in the interim , and re authorizing some others that  didnt port over..

NEVER NEVER WILL I AGAIN INSTALL ANYTHING STEINBERG

Your story reminds me of what happened when some years ago I had a look at Cubase LE that came with some hardware I bought.  When I decided I'd seen enough, the danged thing would not fully un-install, took over things on my computer in much the same way you're describing.  It was a nightmare for some time, until a more computer savvy friend helped me with some serious deep cleaning and a re-install of my OS.  I don't know what the deal is with that company, but I understand what you're implying, that Steinberg's programs can act like mal-ware!  I wouldn't mess with their freebie come-ons again if you paid me.

Cubase has been extremely aggressive in getting entry level versions of Cubase bundled with all sorts of hardware, and they've done it for years.  My wrestling match with Cubase LE was before ilok was invented, so I didn't have to hassle with that too.  All I know is that the program was as tenacious as some of those weird toolbars that you can accidentally end up installing and then have to go through vigorous digging to remove.  I'm glad to say I've never seen Cakewalk being as intrusive as Steinberg.

If you have enough disk space, I recommend you taking an image of your main os/program drive before you install any main program (assuming you cut off system restore).

I have about 5 images now: one of just the drive when i formatted, one before S8.5, one before K7, before X1, and one other one.

    Just safer these days

Did you check in Sonar "share drivers with other programs" ?
(i don't know the real english version for that, it's a one to one translation from german version).
But maybe that helps to get you free from struggle. Using steinberg's wavelab here with all Sonar versions without any problems.

I wasn't accusing them of injecting malware, I agree they are tenacious when they install the program and drivers and the tentacles run deep into the system its installed on .I dont know what it "did" to my VSTs and audio drivers, but it wasn't pretty.

AFA sharing drivers, the issues persisted  even after I removed Cubase

I did have an image from two weeks earlier and restored it, so Sonar is back to normal and the VRM and my Saffire play well again.

MOST companies are.. certain things ship with sonar LE also.. something's I have ship with Ableton Live lite etc etc .  for what it's worth I run both full versions.

some of the best spenders customer wise are new customers.. so thats part of it.

MM install ccleaner, and do the registry fix a few times till you get to zero or 1.

thanks Fog, I run CCleaner @ work, and was so frustrated I forget about it !!!
Since I restored my back-up pre cubase its all good now, but next time I will use it.

Now I have peacefully residing on my DAW Traction, PT 8, Presonus Studio 1 and PGMusic Power Tracks. None of these programs affect or have affected my PC as much as the Steinberg did. I dont think the LE versions of cakewalk affect a DAW either.

Stienberg has a strong arm, since some VSTs INSIST on installing their DLL into the Stienberg Folder as default, and some wont even let you change the location, (Musiclabs guitars come to mind.)

thats more to do with the installers. They have a strong arm in locking their native plugins which I paid for and should be able to use in whatever host thing I want.. THAT I dislike them for.

there is a value in your registry which is your default VST install folder.. that is normally looked for , and since you installed cubase AFTER it would re-write it, same if you do with cakewalk stuff also perhaps.  You have mainly US daw software, where as most of mine except for cakewalks / izotope things is all euro stuff.hehe

NEVER NEVER WILL I AGAIN INSTALL ANYTHING STEINBERG

    Hi MM,

Once you have everything back working properly, take the time to make an up-to-date backup image file (using True Image or similar).  That'll ensure you never have to go thru this scnario again.  If anything goes wrong after a demo/update/install/etc, you can reload the image file... and be right back to where you were (in just a few minutes).

FWIW, I'm currently demo'ing the Adobe Production Premium CS 5.5 bundle.
It's a huge install... and there's no way I'd trust it to uninstall clean/complete.
Right before installing the demo, I created a backup image file.
Once the demo period is up, I'll reload that image file... and the Adobe apps will effectively/cleanly be "uninstalled".

    Best Regards,

It's a funny (sad) thing with DAW hosts. As George Bush once said, "You're either with us or you're not." Seemingly, DAW hosts hold the same philosphy with your computers resources.

My guess as to the problems with Sonar and the VST's is that Steinberg changed the mapping to the VST folder to its VST folder (usually c:\Program Files\Steinberg\VST Plugins) during the installation process.  This probably removed the mapping that was already setup for Sonar (c:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VST Plugins).  So, now when you tried to run Sonar and use VSTs in the folder that it thought it should be using, it is not longer the same folder that Sonar expects.

Thank is just a guess, but I remember that Sonar and Steinberg have separate folders for that stuff.  It would have been smarter for (all) the companies to have a standard folder where VSTs could reside no matter who the vendor is.
