The vultures are circling. Is there a demo version of Cubase, I did not see one when I went looking.

Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

There is a demo version of Cubase, but for anything higher than the Elements version you need to have the USB eLicencer.

But Cubase 9.5 pro for half of the price is a bargain. I "jumped ship" from Sonar to Cubase Pro, and did not regret that move. Especially the Control Room and MIDI editing was one of the main factors to switch DAW. Now I must say I really work a lot with MIDI, so people working more with audio could be better off with Studio One.

Not for the new 9.5. They don't release a demo until after the first maintenance update.

If you work in MIDI, Cubase is THE ticket IMO...

trying to wait out the BF sales to do theirs...

I'm just starting on it, but I like what I'm seeing in it. For a long-time Sonar user like me, it's an adjustment. I think it has some really strong aspects.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

Cant seem to find it looking here - everything but Cubase unless I am going blind https://www.steinberg.net/en/products/steinberg_trial_versions.html

I do have a eLicencer for my XILS Labs software so that is not an issue.

Edit - OK found the 8.5 demo here https://www.steinberg.net/en/newsandevents/news/newsdetail/article/cubase-pro-85-trial-available-3528.html

Sonar was my first DAW, and has been my goto DAW since forever.  A couple years ago I got Cubase 7.5, then 8, then 8.5.  I agree that "it is an adjustment".  It took me about a month of watching Groove3 tutorials and youtube tutorials to feel confortable with it.  I also have Studio One 3 and Mixbus 4, and am now demoing Reaper and Mixcraft.  My opinion, and this is very subjective, but my opinion is that of these alternatives to Sonar, Cubase is the one that is actually an upgrade , more complete and a step up.   As Larry noted, the midi features are great.  Studio One and Mixcraft are much easier for the transition, but Cubase was/is worth the effort.

My biggest complaint about Cubase is the GUI--for such a pro software, it's general appearance is more like a flashback to the early days of DAWS; I wish it had the skins/theme modifications that Sonar and Reaper have.

I have never regretted getting Cubase as my backup to Sonar.  I plan to continue using Sonar until it no longer works, but Cubase is my backup, and I will be spending more and more time with it.

If you have access to Groove3, it would be worth taking a quick tour, just so you can see what it has to offer.   Just my 2cents.

Rumor has it will be $255.  That's almost tempting.  That's my Live upgrade right there. I think FL, Reaper, and Live will suffice.

They keep upgrading Reaper all of the time.

I think the US pricing for the SONAR crossgrade may not go live till Monday (according to posts on KvR).  I also think they have said the Sweetwater price will be $255 not this $225 some people are quoting.

I was already planning to get Cubase anyway, though not till Spring/Summer.  I ordered an eLicenser on Tuesday using points at Musician's Friend, right after the Cakewalk announcement.  Though to be honest I don't think Cubase and I will get along very well.  No 32-bit plugins and no ARA seem like a big loss.

Does jBridge still need to run as admin?  That wasn't a workable system for me last time I looked at it.  I have a couple of other plugins that can act as bridges though, but I'd prefer the DAW itself support the plugins formats I have/use.  I don't like Ableton because it doesn't do VST3 for the same reasons.  I do think Cubase's MIDI features will be very welcome and dongles and I get along just fine.

I doubt I'll stop using SONAR though, but I always get a lot out of learning and using other applications.  If you really want to learn a DAW I think learning and using another different one can be one of the most instructive thing you can do.  The differences and likenesses can help you refocus on what you are doing and how you are doing it.  I think it applies to lots of things really.

Now that is very tempting! When I look through most of my projects they are mainly MIDI with in-the-box instruments and some vocal/guitar audio tracks. I can get a USB e-licenser for £16 so with the $255 (~£192) for Cubase Pro from Sweetwater that's around £208. Hmmm.

Me too. I already had Studio One so was planning to transition to that but...
Cubase looks like an upgrade from Sonar. I'm thinking that if I have to change my daw it would be nice to upgrade to something with more features/flexibility, like Cubase.
I'm going watch youtube videos all day to help me decide.

Good idea re YouTube! Me too :) I already have S1 Pro, Reaper and Cubase Elements but I suspect that Cubase Pro is a BIG upgrade in terms of features.

And there is the Rub not only do you have to buy the software but one also need to tie up a USB port with a dam dongle, which is an additional expense in its own right.

USB hub, go big.  Really big:

That is a Cubase eLicenser, a HP thumb drive (with Waves and Plugin Alliance keys), a Blackmagic Design Fusion dongle, an iLok 2, a Newtek Lightwave dongle and an old eyeon Fusion hasp dongle.

And don't go cheap.  You are best to also make sure it's not Bus powered,
as those tend to interfere, unless you've got really good one.
