Cubase projects to Sonar

So I finally decided to jump ship. But my biggest concern is that I wont be able to finalize all my old project using Sonar. And what about all the archived material? If I decide to crossgrade I dont want to look back :)

Is it possible to convert in some way? What about OMF? My Cubase Project use Audio/Midi/VSTi

You should definitly finnish your open projects in cubase. That would be the smart thing to do, unless your at the mastering stage of the project. Then it wouldnt hurt to import the stereo wave into sonar for further processing.

If you're like me and have a LOT of projects that you never quite finnish I understand your desire to move them from Cubase to Sonar. Any way you do it, it's gonna be a bit of work involved.

OMFI export has worked out fine for me most of the time. It's certainly fast, you can just leave both programs open and export from Cubase and open in Sonar. You'll have to bounce any midi-clips to tracks and export them as midi files (which will also contain your project tempos). This will be a bit of work if you use a lot of midi.

Just don't throw your dongle in the thrash until you've successfully transferred all your projects to Sonar!!

Just make sure to export all your tracks from Cubase, as they are saved in xml format, and all the midi is there as well, showing as text, fx banks are binaries in hex text format. Should make it a breeze to recover an old song even in 500 years.

If Sonar had a similar function it would make it pretty easy to do project conversion.

Well I guess you can't have pro features And a step sequencer ;)

... if Cubase had all the features of SONAR the OP wouldn't need to upgrade to the better DAW.

Don't know about the OP, but my main reason to switch to S7 is because of an extra feature of Cubase that Sonar doesn't have ... the dongle ;)

In my case, using only MIDI, even with S7 which has some nice improvements, S7 is still lacking a bunch of MIDI functions, editing, visual helpers that I'm use to in C4.
I can live with S7, but wouldn't mind a couple of enhancements on the MIDI side.

Btw, is there something like retrospective record in S7 ? Missing it so badly :(

Now don't get me wrong, S7 also has a few nice features not available in C4 (not speaking about the step sequencer ), so all this is very much user specific.

We exchange projects all the time between S6/7 and C4 using OMF and midi-files. Only have had one problem witha an OMF from C4 where all tracks came out distorted in S6 & S7. We usually also include the presets from VSTs and a text file with details about the tracks to be able to rebuild the project as close as possible. So, that's how I would do it.
For projects that are ready for mixing, just the OMF, good old wave-files or broadcast wave should be fine.

oh those memories come rolling back at times. Cubase is not as bad as people make out! Just that Sonar is being recognised for what it is I guess. sure you will not be dissappointed.
