Cut & Paste single row of midi notes to another track?
In the past, for drum tracks I have run the CAL script for split notes to tracks in order to create separate tracks for each piece of the drum set, but I can't get that to work in X2 or X3. I'm using a Korg Triton for drums on this project, so I have to record the drums onto the individual tracks. The CAL script will split the tracks out just fine, but when I try to record a midi part onto an audio track in the manner that I used to, Sonar crashes with a fatal error report. It does this every time after using split notes to tracks. What I'm asking is if it's possible to cut only the snare from the piano roll and paste it into another midi track by itself. I can highlight and cut all the snare hits by hitting & highlighting the notes on the corresponding keyboard note, but I'm having no luck pasting it into a new midi track. Is this possible? Am I missing a step? As stated, I can cut the highlighted row of snares, it just doesn't appear in the new midi track when I try to paste it. I've tried pasting it into the piano roll view and/or directly into the new midi track, but nothing happens. It's not pasting. Am I trying to do something that's not possible? Thanks

It should work just as you have described. Make sure the target track has focus before pasting. In X3 the track name with a bright background has the focus.

My mistake. Yes, it does work. Apparently I hadn't bounced to clips, so it wasn't pasting the whole track, only portions that were toward the end of the track were pasting, so I thought it wasn't working at all. Thanks for the reply. There is one odd anomoly to add to the problem with the CAL script. I noticed that the individual tracks that were split out had double layers. In other words, if I split the track to slip edit, I would find another track under the first. I don't know why that's happening, but since I can't get Split Notes To Tracks to work anyway, it's a non-issue. Thanks

CAL is getting pretty old. The split notes script was written in 1993 and development on the language stopped quite a while ago. While I do use CAL for very simple things like now time manipulation, it has been years since I have relied on scripts like "Split Notes To Tracks".

Scook, I read some of the posts in the other thread similar to this and saw the mention about the outdated CAL script. I've fallen into some tried-and-true work habits that are outdated at this point. On more recent projects I've used plug-ins and soft synths rather than rely on my old outboard gear. It's a lot of fun when it works, but aggravating when it gets glitchy, as we all know. I doubt that I'll use the CAL scripts at this point. I used to think that the day would come when I had all of this down, but I've accepted that the rapid rate of software development is going to keep us all in a constant state of learning and updating our way of doing things. It's nice to have this forum with knowledgeable people like you who provide help. I don't know where some of you find the time to keep up, but I'm grateful that you do.

if its only happening some of the time (doubled clips) than it could be the way you edit clips/split,exc. overlapping.

Another thread came up a few days ago about the Spit Note CAL. I did some experimenting with it, and was pleasantly surprised to find that it seemed to work just fine in X3d.

I use a system that's crude but very quick and reliable: clone the entire track and then delete what I don't want.

Yeah, that is my MO because I usually only need certain notes for reinforcement. I have thought about writing a custom CAL script but have not bothered with it.

Scott Garrigus on his site digifreq.com has a short video on how to do that. You can find it quickly by going to YouTube and searching for "Event Inspector Scott Garrigus".
1. Clone the MIDI track with no events (notes) so that you have a target track to put the note line in.
2. Use the Event Inspector to grab the note line you want from the other MIDI track.
You're done.

The odd thing about the double layers is that the track sounded fine without that phazy effect you get when two of the same midi notes are triggered simultaneously. Also, on the staff view there were no double notes, which does happen when you accidentally paste over existing midi events. The problem with the CAL script only happens when I try to record one of the split-out tracks onto an audio track. Split Notes To Tracks works as it should (aside from the double layer), the problem occurs when recording the midi track to audio after the split. I didn't try deleting the first layer of the double layered track to see if it would record. That didn't occur to me. I never got past trying to record the first split-out track, since the program crashed each time I stopped the first recording at the end of the track.

in the piano roll view, click the note on the virtual keyboard, click 2 on your keypad to nudge all selected notes to track below. be sure to put a midi track there first. quick work of splitting notes.

Blogman I tried what you suggested, but all I can manage to do is move the row of midi notes down to the next keyboard note below, rather than move it to a new track. Cool trick for what it does do, thanks for pointing it out. Is there a way to move the note up to the one above? I tried all the keypad numbers, aside from 1 & 3, which nudge the note to either side, but I couldn't find a way to move it up to the next keyboard note above the selected note.

You just need to move the focus to the Track view (e.g. click a track header in the TV) before hitting Num2 or Num8.
Btw, why do you have to record the drums onto individual tracks just because you're using Triton? You don't like using a drum map?

Ditto what Biflipper does. It's quick and never screws up.. Clone the track as many parts are wanted. Hi light everything but what you want to keep and delete. Rename each track.

I will reiterate my previous comment. Event Inspector takes care of it for you. Easy as "Cake".

I watched his Event Inspector video before but I don't think it was as fast as the nudge method. I'll watch it again.

I think I did try clicking the header in the TV, but still couldn't get it to paste into the new track. I may have done something incorrectly -- not unusual for me when I'm learing something new. As far as recording onto individual tracks rather than using drum maps, the truth is that I tried working with drum maps years ago and never got it right, so I adopted the technique that I'm using on this song. This is an old song that I recorded a few years ago, thus the Triton. These days I've been using Session Drummer, so I just use the mixer to mix the drums and control them individually. For me old habits die hard when it comes to recording. Once I find something that works without glitches and surprises, I tend to stick with it, even though there may be more sensible ways to work. I burn out fast on solving software mysteries, as I'm sure most people do. Now I have to go figure out why I'm missing plug-ins in X3. I had them in X2, but they've vanished into thin air. I can't find Addictive Drums, which I know is new for X3, but I'm also missing plug-ins that I was using in X2. But that's another issue that someone else started a thread about a few days ago. I guess I'll go hunt that thread down and see if it helps me. Thanks for the help from everyone who has offered ideas in this thread. I've learned some new stuff. (I hope the quote button works. I don't think I've tried it yet in this forum.)

Oops, thanks X, left out the all important step where you Press D to switch the PRV focus back to track view then press 2 and watch the note split to the track below. :)
