Cut&Paste

Simple enough to do.

Select the track
Position your NOW time to the gap between songs 1 & 2
Hit 'S' (for Split)

Now you can copy this portion over to your new project.

You could of course copy the entire wav into your new project and do the split there.

This is theoretically & in practice much safer as you're working on a copy of the data, not the original, hence the original remains intact & safe.

Also, you could always simply slip edit each song by trimming off the beginnings & ends of each song.

I followed your suggestion. I copied the portion to my new project and only this portion is visible in the new project.
Unfortunately the file size of the copied sections did not decrease although I selected just a small part of the record. So each time I pasted a portion into a new project I have these large files. Maybe I overlooked something?
When doing copy & paste I expected to have only the part of the .wav files copied into the new project that belongs to the portion I selected ...
