Hello, everybody.
Here are first two movements of D. Shostakovich's string quartet performed with Xsamples.

Started out slow, but built up into an interesting piece that told an interesting story. The sample library used seemed to work very well.

I ended up doing some research into the Shostakovich, which then lead to more research into modal compositions.

    Cheers

Not a classical bone in my body and very little knowledge of composers, but I enjoy listening to good music, as I am right now.. Great samples and obviously a lot of talent to play this, even if it's not yours. Emotional and dynamic! WOW!

Thanks, guys, for taking a moment of your time to listen and comment.
The purpose of the exercise was to dive deeper into the score, to brush up my knowledge of alto clef, to learn how to use this rather complicated library and, of course, to perform this genius music the way I feel it.
All I can say - it was fun.
I'm glad to hear that you liked it and it touched you on some level.
There are 3 movements left and I don't know if I should continue.

i know you love this sorta stuff, the opening motif of this quartet uses a riff Dmitri Shostakovich incorporates into lots of his work, being his name DSCH, which in German notation is D-Es-C-H, or D-Eb-C-B.

Slava, excellent work, it sounds pretty close to a real quartet to me! did yiou spend a long time on articulations for this?

That's just bloody brilliant! His signature sound is literally his signature.

another more well-known example is BACH which is Bb-A-C-Bnatural...

i was thinking for me my surname is HAIGH so i could do B-A-I (the root note of whatever scale i use)-G-B....hours of fun! you could use SHAD or Eb-B-A-D...which leads to some weird chord changes right there!

This is nice, man. Do continue - and I should check out our friend Shostakovich. He has some real nice dark twists, moving between a lot of mixed emotions. Awesome.

That sounded exceptionally good for a solo string library. That's a great piece of music as well.

    The Xsamples, you mean these?

Yes, Mark it took a lot of time to understand structure of the instruments and their strong and weak points. CC implementation is the most confusing thing. Also I don't have a 88-key keyboard, so changing keyswitches was pain in an ..... everything.

Shad, Rob, Tom, Ed, and Frank thank you all for the encouraging words.

Yes, Ed. That's the beast. I have a Kontakt version.

There are only a few classical pieces I enjoy, but you did a great job with this and now that I understand how hard it is to wrestle with samples to make them sound anywhere near right, I'm even more impressed!

I love classical music, but I'm not that well acquainted with Shostakovich, only one CD in my collection. This particular work sounds like a good reason to explore him further. dark and brooding. Excellent work. Instruments sound terrific.

Very nicely done. I like using loops and samples, all thought not big on the classical arrangements and compositions, it is fun to see where I can take my style of thought with music in arranging and composition. It's like having an entire orchestra at your finger tips and you don't have to pay for them each time, just one payment up front. Very nice piece of work you did here.

Thank you for the response, John!
At that time I bought XSamples solo strings and wood.
Now you still can buy them one by one,
    but it's quite expensive.
