D'oh! Of all the things to forget with a reformat....

Three weeks into a clean install of Win 7 on my i7 machine Everything was fine, but there was that nagging feeling I'd forgotten a tweak or two. After doing a pretty heavy mix last week I noticed my CPU meter was a little quirky. Turns out I forgot to disable core parking!

Just a reminder if you have a machine with virtual cores, disable core parking it does matter.

Maybe you could remind us how to do this.

I haven't seen this topic discussed in years, and that link is 4 years old!

Can anyone point to a recent article/forum thread that confirms this tweak is still necessary?

(I'm not arguing that it isn't -- I honestly don't know.  Again, just pointing out that for something so "necessary", it's barely discussed anymore).

I can confirm the tweak is still necessary (so it must be true  )
Or google if you don't believe me.

    Cheers...

I googled it and there seems to be quite some differences of opinion about it.

Here's an interesting link about it.

Yes, I Googled it too (Just like I did 4 years ago) and the only thing that's clear is that there's just as much confusion and debate about it now as there was then.

That being said, many thanks for posting that link, mudgel.  The article explained why my i7-based system had no parked cores, even though I had never disabled core-parking (Under power management, my minimum processor state is set at 100%.  Not sure if I set it that way at some point, or if it's part of the High Performance profile I chose.  Regardless -- no registry tweaks or 3rd party utilities required!).

    Gents,
reading this thread starts to make me curious about "Core parking".
I found out that this option doesn´t have to be enabled (0 %,you know what I mean)
if in the energy options of windows (7- 64 bit here,
is this the right english word?) are set to "highest perfomance."
Afaik the energy option"highest perfomance" is basicly still recommended for all daw´s.

    Have fun

I have one drive on my system that I haven't replaced yet, it's a 1tb WD green drive (I know...I know) for backing up files, documents etc. Anyway, it doesn't like High Performance as a power option so I have to keep my setting at Balanced, thus core parking is an issue for me until I get around to replacing that drive.

    Hi emwhy,
have you thought about a hard drive caddy?
The balanced option can (not must) cause problems .

    Alex,

The confusion I'm referring to is not so much about getting the "results", but rather the best way to accomplish it.

I was puzzled why "disabling core parking" hadn't been discussed much recently.  The answer seems to be (from replies in this thread) that a common Win 7 DAW tweak automatically takes care of it for you -- without any of the registry tweaks or outside tools that may or may not work.

My "results" are that I don't get click and pops, whereas before I would. Yes there is a Win7 registry tweak that does something similar on a per operating system basis. It's all fairly straightforward if you test it yourself... Cheers...

Please take a breath and read the previous posts before commenting.  You seem to be taking my posts the wrong way.  I'm not questioning your position -- and yes, I have googled the topic.  If you read the provided link and what others here are saying (Pragi, for instance), you'd see that the registry tweaks/tools have historically not always worked for everyone.  Hence, the confusion.

Pragi seems to have hit on the right answer (IMO, based on what I experienced).
