DAW is back, and it works! Thanks! :)

My son got my DAW working again by replacing the power supply and the video card.

OK, I think somehow the 2 HD's got switched around, so it boots up using the 2nd HD, which I haven't updated for over a year (I back up to another HD).  Anyone know how to make what it now considers the backup HD the main HD?

Well, now I see all my projects, but X1 isn't anywhere to be found.  Hopefully that won't be a big thing to reinstall.

That's weird Janet. I've never heard of an entire program disappearing from a power supply melt down.

I imagine stranger things have happened.  I thought it was even weirder that a year's worth of data was missing.

I guess it's even stranger that it's now there.

OK, looks like my main HD is now F drive and X1 is there.  This could get interesting.

So what was C drive? You can rename it, F to C if it's the proper physical drive with a new name.

That's the weirder part.  My backup won't turn on, so I can't even see it.  So I have no idea what the present C drive is.  Well, maybe I had 2 HD's in this machine. I really don't remember. :(

Yeah, Craig, that doesn't seem to work.  I somehow need to make the machine recognize the former C drive as the C drive now.

I'd have to get your motherboard maker & model number and get the manual to really be able to help like that.

    You could:

    - Swap the hard drive cable ends that go onto the mother board (EASY for your son to do this)

    *OR*

    - You could change the drive letters from Administrative Tools / Computer Management (another one for your son because this option might still be hidden)

    *OR*

    - You could change the boot drive in the BIOS as Reece suggested, except that anything that references "C" won't find your files if they are now on a different drive (and vice versa).

that shouldn't be a problem since the drive she wants to be C USED to be C but when her son fixed her computer they got switched around.

Craig is fully on it. All of these are the things to be looking at.

My bet is that the BIOS got reset during the repair and the previous boot order got messed up.

I think so too (I Googled it).  I was able to get into the BIOS, but couldn't see how to change the boot order.  (both drives are in brackets, and according to the notes on the right, that means they're not there or I can't change them or something...can't remember right off hand.  But nothing I tried worked.)

if the "2nd" drive is booting up to windows (which is what it sounds like you're saying) but your programs aren't there that you've been running for the past year, then it's possible she has a RAID 1 system which was disabled at some time.

or she had a data drive which had windows installed to it as well but set up by the person who built the system (her son) to boot on the primary drive.  not sure why he would have done that on purpose, but it's a possibility.

I am not even sure this forum works correctly either. Good luck there on your computer because write down or memorize what steps have been taken. The computer is a stupid machine and you or someone has to allow for that when working on a computer. It's not even a baby, it is a electronic gizmo made to give headaches!

Back in the day simply switching the cable to the drive determined which one was the C drive.... I would try that. It is possible they did get re-connected incorrectly.

Shut it off..... swap the cables ( power cables don't matter)  and reboot to see what it does.

That be the data cable not the power cables, which are easy to tell the difference. Unless your original C: drive bit the dust so the computer is booting off of the other drive now because it can not do anything else. Try changing the boot order in the BIOS if necessary, because it can be done, but still should not have changed, so it could be the cable to the drive that got switched (the data cable).

Well, thanks to all your great input, I just opened 'er up and switched those cables...and it works!  :)  I asked my son if he had disconnected them for some reason and he said he had disconnected everything.  I think he likes wires a little bit too much.

Then the screen resolution was all messed up and he reminded me how to fix it and told me that's because I had a new video card.  But it didn't do that before I switched the hard drive cables.

So hmm.....now it's probably gonna blow up or something.  But maybe, just maybe...I mean MAYBE I can do a new piece now before long.  I mean, I have a whole week before school starts again!  :)

Thanks again, all of you!  Sure do appreciate your help.
