DAYS

they be-a gettin' shorter!

Most noticeable to us northern folk. The sun never sets above the arctic circle...
Until winter, when it never rises.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but that midget nun you've been dating?  It's probably a penguin.

Once upon a time I was in northern Alberta in June. I was sitting in the yard at midnight reading the paper. The sun eventually set, only to rise again around 4 am. People up there live hard in the summer.

    Regards, John

I'm afraid the naysayers are right. Santa doesn't exist... at least not at the North Pole.

Interesting fact I learned from an elementary school library book. The whole notion of a "jolly old man in a red suit bringing gifts to kiddies in a flying reindeer driven slay" came from Lapland. Before masquerading as "Santa" he was known as a Lap Shaman, a wizard who ate hallucinatory mushrooms and thought he could fly. He fed these little morsels to his reindeer which made them fly also. His purpose in delivering gifts to little kiddies in mid winter was to ward off the evil doldrums of long dark days. When Catholicism came to "convert" the heathens, the celebration was incorporated into Christmas.

Also of interest: Penguins are South Polers. They will never have the chance to clash cymbals over a sleeping polar bear...

A penguin was driving down the street when his car started to billow smoke.  He pulled it into a garage and the repairman said to give him a few minutes to diagnose things.  So, having some time to kill, the penguin went for a walk and found a Baskin Robbins.  After a while he went back to the shop to check on things and the repairman gave him the news "Hey, looks like you blew a seal."  "No," replied the penguin, "It's just some ice cream."
