DI box with audio interface - Helpful?
Is there any value to using a DI box, or one of the Sansamp stomp boxes, between electric and bass guitar and a Sonar Power Studio? I'm currently plugging everything in through the Hi-Z input on my SPS-66 but I'm wondering if a DI box makes for a better matchup between the instrument and the interface.

Hi Zenwit probably not might be the answer. The main thing that a DI offers is a higher input impedance to present to the instrument. And if you are already have a High Z input on something else then chances are that it too will have a high input impedance. (Check the specs to see what that is) It is when the input impedance is too low eg 2 or 3 K ohms that this can severely effect the sound of the instrument. But once you get to 100 KOhms or 500KOhms etc then it won't effect the sound at all.

For bass, Absoulutey! I have a passive Di I have been using and I bought The Sans Amp bass driver (about $200) last week. MY GOD WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It's as solid as any bass tone I have ever heard recorded and versitile as hell. I am fairly confident you can get nearly any bass sound you desire with this stupid thing. Definately the bess bass sound I have ever recorded. Put it this way... My bassist wants to go back and re-track the basslines on every song we have done so far with this. I give it a big thumbs up.

You know I kind of suspected this might be the case ChuckC. Electric guitar straight in to the interface sounds pretty good. Bass is a different situation. Straight in it sounds kind of mushy and ill defined. (Wait, that might just be my playing.) I've found that putting a stomp box compressor in line before the input helps a bit. Might have to try and borrow a sansamp. And many thanks to the other replies above.

Since "Hi-Z" can mean anything over 600 ohms, it would be worthwhile to test which offers the higher input impedance, the DI or the interface. It also makes a difference whether the DI is active or passive. My guess would be that going straight into the interface would present a higher impedance than a passive DI, but about the same as an active DI.

Yeah but this thing is an active di with a pre amp designed FOR bass. I have never liked going straight in to the interface with guitar either though, for that I prefer micing a real cabinet.
