DIY Multiple Guitar Stand

Found this over at the Instructables site. Looks like an easy project, fairly quick to build and low cost. Plan on building one soon.

They also have a couple of other music projects some folks might find interesting.

Have fun!

I can't imagine the 2 horizontal pieces along the bottom holding any weight without sagging. You might put another foot support in the middle or some kind of rod or broomstick inside the pvc to strengthen it.

It's ugly and my Warwick RS7 was only $80.. not worth my time unless I could make one that looked cooler or worked better in some way. I was thinking of covering my Warwick in leather and suede.. now that would be a cool mod.

Good of you to share. I love DIY stuff, and I kind of especially like it if genuinely does the job and also shows its DIY roots. I have similar metal stands and I can certainly afford to buy things like that and technically I suppose my time is worth a good deal more than the cost savings but I hate the feeling of overpaying for factory-produced junk.

Moreover $60 or whatever is frankly a significant expense for a lot of musicians. I know it was for me when I was making my living as a recording and touring artist. And to the point above about sagging-- PVC is actually remarkably rigid. I'll bet it works great.

    Cheers.

Well, from what I saw, and read, it has some sideways instability. I would cut the vertical pipes somewhere halfway and add 2 t-junctions with a crossbar - simple, and you can do it even on a finished one, I see.

Would give it a quite a bit of extra support, and prevent any lateral distortion of the frame.

Just my 2 eurocents. Not sure if I'd build one - the relatively low price of those commercial stands keeps amazing me - but rolling your own can be oodles of fun, and very rewarding.

I think if I were going to do this I would use large wood dowels and boards and finish them nice where exposed. If you used pine you could still do it cheap but it would take some tools and skill. To me a wood one could look nice if done right, it could even be made to fold for travel with some type of pins to hold it open when in use. Might need a drill press and some type of saw but it would be fun to try.

However, I do think the Warwick stands are very well made (better then expected) and cheap enough. Cheaper then having all your guitars damaged if the your home made one falls over.

    thanks for the link...

another easy guitar hanger under the right circumstances: The tool hangers listed in another of the inscrutibles project pages fit perfectly into the modular IKEA wood shelving units' screw holes, just twist them in. I use these for my amp racks in the control room, and have guitars hanging off the vertical supports. At the risk of jinxing myself, I've had them up for 3 years, with nary an accident.
