Yeah I saw that thread. I saw on gearslutz that people got owens 703 for like .50 per square foot.

I was hoping to get that price. I can get the Knauf(703 equivalent) at Viking for about 1.18/SF.

Already called them. Ive been searching a lot. Was hoping somebody knew about the lower rates.

Anybody know a contractor in L.A. that can help me get a contractors price?

Thanx-

Ive decided to go with just the boards and the material and no frame or wire. Lighter, sides open to  air flow and easier/cheaper to make.

Well there is a close place to me that sells the Knauf equivalent to owens cornign 703 at about 1.19 per square foot.

Is the knauf stuff as good? Looks like it is a good way to go cuz they use more eco friendly products to make it and has no phenol, formaldehyde, acrylics or artificial colors.

Knauf Ecose is what I used.
Its identical (3lbs. per cubic ft.) to OC 703, except the binder chemicals as you mentioned.
Its brown as opposed to yellow.
Personally, I'd wrap in plastic before the fabric if you are placing them over your mix position or other sensitive gear.
Also the 1x2 frames I used are small but add a lot of strength when you mount them.
I wouldn't want to mount without a frame, but it may work.

Ok as you can see Im excited as the last 1000 posts were me-

anyway, after my gig today, I got home, had a bud light wheat beer and then just now opened all nine boxes and took out the panels outside (using a maske, rubber gloves and long sleeve thick sweatshirt) and alternating them stacked them upright so they can air out-

Its on and crackin tomorrow! hehe

15+ hours into the project, finally borrowed a friends drill so I have the screwdriver drill and drill bit drill going- makes things way faster.

I got some stretchy black material that air goes through better than burlap but has smaller holes in the knit. I like stretchy. If somethign rips, I can stretch and staple.

I got pics. Will post them all when whole project is done-

1.50/yard for the material (black burlap was 4.50/yard- Gotta love the downtown L.A. fabric district!

Attaching the fabric is actually the hardest part of this whole process.
Not really hard, but just tedious...if you like gift wrapping you might enjoy it, but I hate gift wrapping.
Lance, I'm not sure what type frame you're using...a full 4" frame will leave you with crisp edges, but you end up with a lot of the panel covered in wood.
If you are using the 1x2 frames like I did, be careful of pulling your fabric too tight as you may round off the corners of the panel, which doesn't leave that crisp look.

God I hate gift wrapping.

Ok, so the panels are all made- getting ready to start putting them up but I went to GC and SamASH to get the Behringer ECM800 and they dont stock it-

I wanted to use it to measure my room before, in between and after the panels were put in-

Well, I cant wait! Im just going to test using my cardioid condenser-

It will still at least show the difference of before and after lol-

Ill get the ECM8000 later to get a final reading haha

Any kind of omni mic will work - even the mic built in to a Radio Shack SPL meter if you happen to have one of those.

Obviously, you need to position it in your normal mix position at ear level.  I used a camera tripod.

Yeah Im just holding the meter in hand at mix position. I did a bunch of test since they only take like 5 secs, and they are sonsistent, so I think it will work.

Finally got the Room EQ wizard working well with my SPL meter from the shack and so I made my first reading-

I was impatient last night (already put up panels in corners behind speakers and 1 behind me on my right) cuz I couldnt find a n ECM8000 but Im glad I didnt find that mic now that I realize I can use the SPL meter to read the curve (since it has an output) and not just give my sound pressure.

Here is my first reading with 3 corners treated(6 panels out of 28 up)

Question: Why is the response of your sound card not flat from end to end?

Yo RLD

Where/are your panels completely covered with fabric? Or open-backed like Spindlebox's?

What type of fabric?

Re:DIY low cost broadband traps 2010/10/16 10:25:43 (permalink)
I purchased 8lb rockwool.

For the music room I have been using plastic drywall corners for the frames. 2'x4'x4" : 2 pieces of rockwool. These take a lot of time to cut, rivet,... But the exposed surface area is about 30% more.

For the dance studio I am using 2"x4" wood frames:  2'x8'x4" and  4'x4'x4"  both of these have single layers of rockwool.

I used 6" plastic corner pieces to space the 2" rockwool pieces in the center of the 2'x4' frames. Then covered with a layer of "bedsheet" material, and then a layer of synthetic felt material, purchased from Hancock fabrics.

Still got a bunch of panels to make. I have not noticed any "shedding" yet. But I may try the plastic wrap technique just to be sure. I figgered the two layers of fabric would be enough to stop the little bits from escaping. But, whose nose?

J

Hey JM24,
Yes, my panel are completely covered with fabric.
On the 1st page of this thread I have some pics and a video link that shows how to make them.
I used 144 thread count bed sheets from IKEA.
1 twin sheet cost $4 and was enough fabric for 2 4"x24'x48" panels

I was mostly curious because you indicated particles were coming through the material, even though it appears you have a 2nd layer on the faces of the panels.
