There is a ton of musicality in hip hop especially current hip hop. Check out The Roots for example. A lot of Dr Dre, Dj Quik and Battle Cats work. Westcoast hip hop more often than not are just funk records with raps on top.

To hell with all of this Hip Hop discussion....  what we need to discuss is "When is MORE COWBELL most appropriate to add to our mixes!?!?!??!"

I rarely listen to hip-hop these days because like many of the commercialized genres of music, it is dominated by trendy attempts to appeal to the least common denominator. However, many of the comments about hip-hop come from pure ignorance. There are Juliard graduates making hip-hop. Grammy winning acts like the Roots use live instruments. One of the things about hip-hop that keeps it continually evolving is that it is unlimited in how it can be created. I have heard hip-hop utilizing everything from harps to live bagpipes. To pigeonhole it based on the tiny cross-section of what is now mainstream pop music is absurd. The ironic thing about many of the criticisms is that most of the people who lob them would fail miserably at making it because their view is so narrow that they would produce exactly what they accuse hip-hop of being rather than what it actually is. the accusation of it being repetitive is redundant considering most western pop music is repetitive. a loop is a loop, whether you sample it or repeatedly play it with live instruments.

I'm certainly not pigeon holing anyone and I'm not saying all hip hop is bad. I will listen to anything if it is done well.  And, while it is true that difficulty or skill does not determine desireablity, neither does desireability determine quality.

I love candy and ice cream but that's not going to sustain my body in any good way.  That's exactly what most popular music is. Ear candy. And like sugar candy rots your teeth, ear candy rots your brain(IMHO). Music for dancing is all good and well, but I personally think there is more to music than making you want to shake your booty.

That's what defines a good _______act for me. If it makes you groove too, even better.

Getting back to the OP's topic, it really does help if you can ask something more specifc than "How do I make beats".  Are you having difficulty with the step editor?

the sad thing is if i would of have asked "How do i get that Zepplin Sound" folks would have bombarded the thread with Eddie Kramer, John Bonnham's kit and thier mic choices, and old school compressors....and knew the whole history..and its a shame that alot of the things they did are based on things, that were not well recorded by, down & out drunk and angry Black Guys..

I think Aleef is referring to the fact that a large number of Zep songs including most of Zep 1 was covers of old blues legends. While that is true, the songs sound nothing like the originals. No where near.
I'm glad you brought up Zeppelin though. I would compare quality Hip Hop to Led Zeppelin. Sure, they take ideas from classic songs but they make it their own. That being said, it's even better if they actually have a band playing the music. 

I have nothing against technology but there is a computer program designed to compose music.  I've never seen it but I read about it, though I don't remember where. It's algorhythmic. You input style, mood, tempo, instrumentation and it will create a song. Amazing! I wouldn't pay to listen to it compose though.

It can be as musical or as minimalist as you want it to be but judging by your other posts on the topic you really don't have the slightest clues as to what you are talking about on the genre as a whole. It would be different if you had an educated opinion on the matter but you don't it would be like me saying country music is just a bunch of old boring drunk guys crying about their cat dying when I don't really listen to country all that often. I'm not a particularly big hip hop fan, but certainly it's not ONLY a legit music form but also a HUGE money making opportunity. Anybody who thinks different is just bitter.

Many of the comments have been more ridicilous than the OP, but (I hope) the OP at least is sincere, (unless just a troll).

I don't like any of the rap/hip hop/etc genres, but I wouldn't dare to say they don't require skills. Like in any genre, some are intuitive and talented, some go where the fence is lowest or don't have the true talent, some are just copycats. I do wonder sometimes, though, if those guys are more engineers than musicians, but .. so what... the results can be phenomenal.

The burden of those genres is, IMO, that they are seemingly  the ones where it's both easy and accepted to make whole albums without creating one single original note. That's why, I think, the folks doing those styles need to be a little harder on themselves than some others. Also, they need to accept the scepticism of a part of the audience, unless they can somehow make known, that they're actually doing their own music, not just re-assembling that of the others.

I expect most hip hop acts couldn't care less aout the skepticism of some parts of the audience.

Agreed. That's not the reason you're not qualified to discuss it. It's that you plainly have no idea what you're talking about that should give you pause. 

I don't really understand it but I love me some good Rap/Hip Hop...maybe because I relate to these things on a visceral level. It moves the body and the mind.

The oldest record I have from its progenitors might be the Last Poets one. It reminds me of some of the Beat Poets. To me it is poetry with music...and, yes, beats are very much a part of the music.

i think part of the reason people assume the attacks on hip-hop are based on stereotypes and sometimes outright racism is the unsolicited nature of the attacks. Why would a person who dislikes hip-hop bother responding to a thread like this if not without malicious intent? If one were to replace "hip-hop" with "what would one suggest for Hanukkah Decorations?" and someone were to come in that thread and chime in about all the things they don't about Hanukkah, one would not be shocked if they might have a tinge of anti-semitic feelings. Not saying that is necessarily so, just not surprising. People tend to ignore things they don't care about. It's kind of like the mean spirited adult who feels compelled to approach kids in the Santa line and tell them there is no such thing as Santa. You have to wonder what their motivation is. Most criticism that is hurled at hip-hop is so easily hurled at other forms of music and media and often in a way that goes beyond hypocrisy. I'm not a fan of some of the negative lyrics in rap, but one does not have to look too far to find even harsher lyrics in rock or graphic imagery in movies. Does 3 minutes of a gangster fantasy really cause more damage than 2 hours of gratuitous maiming in a slasher film?

Im having fun doing heavy riffs with more Hip Hop type drum feels,instead of my regular go to drum parts.

X1 comes with a few [not a lot] of HH, rex2 files,I suggest the OP use these,as well as the patterns in Studio Instruments Drums,switch to Piano Roll View,and experiment with making your own and shifting the kick drum around,to learn.

A lot of HH beats[ALL? or the beginning, before changes for different flavours are introduced] are still 2 and 4,just like rock,snare on beat 2 and 4.

If my buddy FZ were still with us today....  he would certainly agree.
He would say " There are those who are the true musicians.... those who have solid soul and rhythm."
These are the ones who would agree with me.
We would rather entertain with our honest music.... and we're willing to do it all for free.     

Amour..i'm sure those kind of thoughts go over well at klan rallies, but hip hop is made by diverse people from all over the world and the same goes for it's audience.

Hip Hop is like a guy who has this hypertrophied James Hetfield-esque picking hand and can play those insane syncopated rhythms all downstrokes BUT can't play a chord w/ the other hand to save his life.

I'm not sure what qualifies Amour to speak for someone else who's been dead for a couple of decades. Myself, I've no idea what Zappa actually thought about hip hop music, though it's notable that he argued against the censorship of rappers when he gave evidence in the senate. So he certainly was supportive of it in that sense. If anyone can find an actual quote of his giving an opinion on hip hop, that would be interesting, though hardly the last word on the matter or anything. But either way, making up what you'd have *liked* his opinion to be is just a bit weird, really.

There are tons of people far more educated in both music and other areas of academia that make and listen to hip-hop. Hip-hop is a mainstream form of ,music internationally now. I'm not overstating a damn thing. I work for a guy like this. He and his friends say all kinds of racist crap and send each other ugly emails and then are shocked that people perceive them that way. I doubt this guy likes every genre of music except hip hop. I also doubt even more that he goes to threads about those genres to make stereotype filled remarks about them. he would no more do that than he would go to a thread about St Patrick's day and start spewing a bunch of Irish stereotypes because he does not like the holiday.
