DSP Limit Question

Hi All
I was using Sonar Platinum to mix a song today and I got a message saying that I had reached my
DSP limit.

I have been putting a UAD compressor on each track and I got the message.
My question is if I put my compressor on a bus then used it on each track would it
take up less DSP resources so I wouldn't get the message.

There are other plugins I need to use but obviously I can't if I reach my limit
with the compressor.

Sonar Platinum - Intel i5 Quad Core - Win7 64Bit - 8 Gig Ram - Focusrite Saffire Pro 14 - Vox AC30HW2X - Torpedo Reload - Vox AC15C1 - MJW Custom Built Amp - Fender NOS56 Strat - Universal Audio and Waves Plugins - Softube - Redwirez IR's

Not a UAD user but if you only have a compressor on the buss rather than on each track then this would reduce your UAD DSP usage.  Thereby freeing up UAD DSP processing for other plugs.

If you need a comp on each track could you not use the Pro Channel?

You may use old versions, or SE plugins. For example (uad solo):
    1176 legacy eat 5% dsp,
    1176 se - 2%
    New 1176 - 16%

Processing bus instead tracks is a good idea, but this is a different approach to signal processing, and it will give different results.

if each track has different compression setting (every compressor is set different) and you need to have a compressor on each track...

    Freeze it.

freezing the track puts it in a deep sleep state. where you cant do a lot of changes to the clip unless you unfreeze it.
but freezing a clip sounds exactly like the original with no change at all.
if you need to make a change to the compressor settings, simply unfreeze it. then freeze it again.

IMO, using a compressor on a bus is good for parallel compression and some effects but if you need it to reduce gain it will only work if every track is of similar origin (all guitars / all drums)
and even then it produces a sometimes unwanted effect.

Set attack and release times never sound good across the board / on all instruments unless your putting it on your master bus in the mix down stages. (IE-Waves SSL G) using it sparingly for Pre Master.

Wookie had a good idea though, Use the PC compression if your UAD is chewing up CPU.

Thanks for the suggestions.Only having had Sonar for a couple of weeks I need to get to grips with it again.
I will try the track freeze option first.
I have asked Universal Audio about this and they tell me it's because I only have a Solo card which
    only has 1 Sharc Processor.

    So use less or upgrade.
