If I were visiting here from another planet.... and I saw the destruction and I talked with earthlings and found out that tornados were not rare I would be questioning the intelligence of the lifeform. "Why does your conventional way of building shelters not shelter you?" Seems like a logical question. I'm not an engineer but I know I could design better. The problem I've seen is when one tries to design better it will be classified "custom" and then finding financial backing to build is the problem. Banks don't like "custom". Weird. I'm not an alien, I'm from here and it sure looks stupid to me and I don't feel safe in my shelter.

The question an alien would ask is "If you know there's gonna be total distruction multiple times a year every year, why do you live there?"

That may be the first question and when he learned that tornado alley covered half of the United States he would then ask about the shelter design. You don't run or move away from problems....you find solutions..at least that's my thinking.

On the other hand, I do feel stupid in my shelter. I feel the same way when I'm out of it. I'd be happy living in an underground bunker. It's more efficient for heating and cooling. There's less lawn maintenance. (It's a natural roof. Weeds are supposed to grow there.) Most importantly, there's better sonic isolation for recording. I'm not allowed to talk to realtors anymore...

We have quite a bit of family just outside of the Joplin area on my wife's side of the family. For the most part, we've confirmed everyone is okay. Her cousin's husband's parents' house was destroyed but they're okay. But her uncle has not yet been able to make any contact with his mom. Praying everything is okay and they find her soon. The footage is just devastating. My church's mission group is down in Alabama right now helping clean up storm debris, but I imagine efforts will get redirected to the Joplin area soon.

I won't mention names but currently there is a building manufacter that markets buildings cheaper than all others offered and withstands hurricane winds. Some people in the US are buying them and modifying into a safe home. Their claim to strength has been proven as they were standing when others were gone from storms such as Katrina. The problem is simple. People pay for conventional like donkeys following carrots on a stick. When they want a home they'll settle for what their dollar will get....what choice do they have? Creative people that have the abilities needed can and do. The rest are left to the mercy of the marketplace.....and I think that is a shame.

I was once entertaining the idea of making a concrete dome house (with the bulk underground). These houses are the strongest there are including being the only kind to withstand a nuclear blast. If you look at these pictures you'll see that they don't have to end up looking like a dome either: http://www.formworksbuilding.com/photos.html Someday I may still make one - who knows! I've still got all of my plans which include a killer studio in the basement next to a full English bar and a "chill-out" room. Heck, all the fun parts are very detailed while the "normal" parts of a house have next to nothing done yet - lol!
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Earthquakes are prevalent in California. My ex-wife and I lived in a house for 9 years that was 3 stories. The bottom story was literally built into a solid rock hill. The builder said they had to dynamite the rock to get the groud level area they needed. In that last big one, the house got one minor crack in the stucco outside and a tiny figurine fell on it's side.

The photos at the Washington Post are very disturbing. I don't think it's practical or economical too think that we as society can easily build entire communities of tornado proof structures. Wind speeds in tornadoes are far greater than hurricane wind. I think tornado proof structures will continue to be built by individualists while everyone else gambles long with insurance and luck. I wonder why more people don't respond to the warnings? My house is barely hurricane proof... I have renovated and fixed up what I can with straps and such but the core of the house is old 1920's stick wood construction with a crawl space. best regards, mike

I know this will sound very simplistic, but it seems to me that if home were designed with the exterior walls that were angled--more or less like a pyramid--that the wind of the tornado go over and around the house. Maybe home designs in the Tornado belt should be subjected to wind tunnel simulations.

Wind speeds in tornadoes are far greater than hurricane wind. I wonder why more people don't respond to the warnings? best regards, mike I believe the first statement is a wonderful example of the type of reasoning that is the reason for the current "conventional" design flaws. And the design flaws don't stop with wind damage. To many know that -all to well. What do you mean they don't respond? ! They go to where they can. What difference does it make what room you're in when your house is demolished? If the family was lucky enough to have a storm cellar then they can hope they're found if they find themselves trapped inside....not unlike one family in Joplin. Wind is wind, and the highest rating to wind damage is just that. It's not based on the name of the storm. I could sell my home Mike and build one storm proof if the bank would approve the loan. That is the problem that a home owner has. The person trying to get their first home wanting to build has the same problem. Our right to own a home that will shelter to ones satisfaction is taken away UNLESS they have the cash to do whatever they want. Money is the name of the game..and the rules are made by those that have it.....period. Regards Mike, Mike

We're two hours north of Joplin and now everyone around here is jumpy when we even get a thunder-storm warning. (like for a couple hours this morning) And I promise I'll never ignore a tornado warning again. Unfortunately we don't have 'cellars' here like we do in Oklahoma (houses built on solid rock for the most part), but we know where to go if necessary. And my HD is going with me! (hopefully) But those poor people in Joplin! It's so bad they're asking volunteers to NOT come yet...it's just such a mess. A young friend of mine who just graduated from here lost her car which was at her grandparents' house...the whole house is gone. Unreal the loss of life, and picking up the physical pieces will take quite awhile. 5 schools and the hospital are out of commission, along with so many other places.

Jon my family has been very lucky/fortunate. We've had them jump over our house and later the same day learn that friends weren't so lucky and have everything they own gone, literally. Their lives and the clothes on their backs all that is left. When your in your house and the alarm goes off....it's a very bad feeling knowing that no matter where you go doesn't matter. If your friends house is blown away it sure brings home the fact that our shelters don't shelter when we need them most. That makes no sense to me and just angers me towards what civilization is all about when we can't feel protected in our homes. That really does seem to be square one doesn't it? I imagine the cave man felt pretty darn safe.....a nice cave and a club... ...a fire....simply amazing that in 2011 and a few recent years I would have traded him strait up. And that ain't funny.

Good to hear from you, Janet. I know you're not far from there. I was a little concerned. As we were driving home from Denver yesterday, we encountered some high winds and several freakishly large dust devils. There was a lot of energy feeding those storms as they moved Eastward.
