Darling Be Home Soon

I Have been working on this one on and off for a bit. It's a cover of a classic John Sebastion tune. I'm learning how to use my different tools. Part of this was recorded with my older Behringer UCA-202 and part of it was done with my new M-audio FW410.

This is the first tune where I record an acoustic guitar. Sorry I haven't had a chance to post a song here in quite a while. All crits are very much welcome. Thanks for your ears.

It is an excellent song. My only criticism would be the pitchy vocals... Kinda up and down..

Don't know the song James, but this is a pretty tune. I liked the subtle strings that appeared at 1:35, the 'brass' - not so much Your voice has a pleasing George Harrison quality to it, you should sing more.

Hello Tap. Hope you're doing well. Its good to hear a John Sebastion tune, especially delivered like this with a "loving spoonful".  The clean and simple treatment fits his artistic style perfectly. I like your choice of instruments and your arrangement. Panning maybe a little wide but that's subjective. As for pitch, vocal chords perform like "reeds" in the woodwinds. A bit more air from a full diaphram and the pitch goes up. But I'm sure you already know this. Your voice has a very sincere and vulnerable quality perfectly suiting this genre...very cool. Really enjoyed this. By the way, I had a VW van too, mine was red and white and I loved  it..........Ron

I wrote a similar title? It was called "Darling I'll be home soon - I only have another 30 minutes with my escort." It was somewhat less romantic. Love the tuba :-) That acoustic guitar needs to be at the head of the line when you do your triage... I may even re-record it. It feels like it either needs a setup? Or maybe to be tuned better. And or chorded better/stronger?

This is a wonderful song – I remember hearing it for the first time (yes, I’m that old) – when that major 7 th chord came in it just broke my heart. It’s great to learn that this music is still being listened to and appreciated. Your recording is rough but it’s great to hear this again. Thanks.

    Hey, James,

I don't remember the original, but this cover sounds really nice!  I know it's John Sebastian, but I'm almost getting a touch of Bob Dylan along with George Harrison in your vocal style on this one.

I also agree with Stratrat about the great sounding 60's folk vibe.

Very nice work, have a good one!

yea...I really enjoyed the tune...I would have liked to hear the horns sustain a bit more to give them a more natural sound...but having them cut off so quickly (as they do) then sound very synthetic...I love your vox pitchniess and all!...very well done!

cool tune..and yes...you need to sing more!

A very pretty song.  Sounds like a 60's folk song.  I would progressively increase the string volume in your chorus.  I like that combination and wanted to hear more of it.

    Thanks for your comments.

I'm very humbled as to the George Harrison references to my voice quality! I never considered myself a singer, but I really think I should work at it.  George is one of my all time favorite guitarists and song writers. Syd Barrett was a masterful composer as well ! My Washburn has been problematic and really needs the intonation worked on . It was extremely hard to get it in tune. Fortunately, the chords all reside down in the open position, but I really need to tend to that truss rod.

I'm still new to the condenser mic and it took may takes to get a decent clarity and level without noise and distortion happening. These were single takes all the way through. I suppose I should learn to use the punch in feature.

I guess I've aged myself. Seems like many don't remember the Lovin Spoonful. I found this video of them doing this song ... Check out the hat on Zal

Darling Be Home Soon - Lovin Spoonful Live ...

Found this one as well ... this one really got me ......

Darling Be Home Soon - Slade Live ???  ---( My, my,  we're all crazy now! )

Thanks all! I'll be working on my vocals and guitar intonation for sure!

Wow, I haven't heard this song in ages!  Great choice for a cover and I like your version a lot.

Don't hear many Maj 7 chords these days

    Very nice.

Never heard it before so can't speak comparatively, but this 60s vibe you've presented suits it just fine to me. Strings sound nice when they come in but not so keen on the brass sounds - I'd be inclined to tweak them some or maybe just go for a different sound altogether. Other than that I kind of like the honesty of it.

Nice to see you back anyway.

I would take it to a Lucifer, those guys are paid to work on guitars... The guy who sets mine up does a great job. And you should buy several packs of the type of strings you want to use, because when they set it up? If you change the strings? Ideally, it should be setup again...

Robbie .... If I take it to a Lucifer, I guess I'd have to go down there to Georgia! That's quite a hike from here and I'm not all that interested in a Les Paul made of gold.

I just re-listened to the soundclick version of this and something seems lost in the mp3 translation. I'll have to try to remix this one this weekend.

i liked it, it's calm. that first word you said was the pitchiest of all of them. i kinda looked at my speaker. other than that, i liked the strings in the background. just enough. how do you do that anyway? keyboard and a vst?

I'm fi'in (pronounced sort of like fin? it's fixin, but shortened? It's a southern thang...)  to take my Goodall in to have it setup again within the next few weeks. Acoustic guitars are like girlfriends? They have to be handled with care, and they can go out of whack every so often? They're moody and when you go in and out of seasons, you have to "baby them." humidity is the most important thing to keep in mind... I keep O-Hole humidifiers in all of my acoustic instruments in the winter (VERY important...) You have to keep your instrument moist, and I may be going away for a while? So I want to make sure my o-hole is moist and pliable... :-(

    Another song from my youth.

Nice work.  On my work speakers the guitar seemed panned a bit too much and it gave me sense of  the tune being a little out of balance.  I might try making a clone of the guitar track and panning to the other side with enough EQ changes to widen the guitar track.  But then I'm an idiot.

The brass thing was very Beatles like!

a lot of fine comments. i LOVE this! totally retro instrumentation and performance, which may or may not have been the intention, but it works so well. the vocals are spot on, acoustic guitar twanging away, subtle strings and the brass/bass part is inspired!

Thanks all for the comments.  I don't think I'll put any real effort into fixing this one. It was really meant to be a platform to get my workflow down with my new gear.

I really appreciate the honest comments on the vocals and will work on getting them better. I should probably try more than just a couple of takes. I guess the vocals are good enough that I should work at them. Also noted is the wide pan on the mix. I did the final mix on headphones this time and opened up the stereo field. I've found in the past that typically that headphones are more sensitive than monitors, so I guess I over did it a tad.

BTW I used TTS-1 for the strings and horns. They seemed decent for what I needed. I probably could have used some better plug-ins but don't currently have any that work better than these right now.

    James,

There are places in this the vox sound like Dylan and in other places a bit like Paul Simon. Sort of an interesting combo.

For a first time recording a guitar, I think it works great.

    Nicely done.
