Better yet: get Pod X3 or similar. External DSP is almost always preferable. And it won't annoy your neighbors.

A few years ago I tested every guitar DI/amp simulator I could get my hands on and I decided on a Damage Control Womanizer, the Deomonizer is a higher gain version. http://damagecontrolusa.com/Products/ It is very versatile but unlike the Pod stuff doesn't try to sound like every possible amp/speaker but does basic amp stuff very well. I have it permanently plugged into my mixer for recording. The Boss GT series are multi effects and have their fans. I have GT-3 that I used to use a lot but I don't use much in the way of effects. I got good sounds from Native Instruments Guitar Rig (v2). I've decided to embrace committment, and traded it for a Boss GT-8 pedal board. Either will sound good, you just have to know how to build your sounds.

Get a classic strat and a Marshall amp. You'll have all kind of tone.

Too true. Nothing will touch a good amp cranked appropriately. But your neighbors will hate your guts.

I am afraid of plug ins alone so from now on I am going to do stereo miced amps and stereo plug ins. Four tracks of guitar is not too much for me. One consideration is do you already have great guitars, great amps, great mics, and great preamps? A great plug in would be less than 10% the cost and that is a big deal to most folks. Most folks I know use the plug ins. Thanks.

Whenever someone asks about plugins or pedals there's always a chorus of people telling us how fantastic amps are. Some of us simply can't use amps.

I heard that Joe Walsh used a POD in the studio.... Seems he could walk in with his guitar and also carry the POD in his gigbag without having to lug a heavy amp around in his golden years. However, I would think that JW had enough money from all those years with the Eagles that he could afford to hire a roadie to do the lugging for him....or record in a studio that would provide that service...... hummmmm. Maybe he uses the POD because he likes the sound? Or is he just lazy ....like me?

Big Eagles fan here....but let's be honest. The Eagles' albums were never really shining examples of GREAT engineering or sounds. Wasn't it mostly about the songs?

Oh yes...I agree 100%. I have also heard (and seen) the Eagles use Mesa amps and other superb examples of audio engineering...... so I would be curious to know if the thing I heard was fact....or rumor... and if true (I can picture it happening) what song did JW use the POD to record the guitar parts.

At the risk of ridicule, I'm not terribly disappointed going direct with the headphone out of a Fender GDEC, or either the headphone out or line out of the GDEC 30. Yes, I've mic'd amps, the biggest audible difference is with the clean tone, but when going for effects modified tone and/or overdriven tone, and if volume and convenience are a consideration, either GDEC works just fine, and the effects are in stereo! (love that stereo chorus and/or stereo delay... ) Yes, my patches are modified, you have to, the factory patches usually stink, just overladen with silliness...

No ridicule here.....fat girls need love too. There's no accounting for taste. But I find it odd that you think the CLEAN sounds like crap direct. I usually find the opposite to be true direct.... I prefer a live amp and a microphone. Nothing makes me happier. Though, I have heard stuff done on a POD that I thought was cool.

For free is "FREEAMP 3" Loads of presets and a wide spectrum of sounds. Also another freebie that's quite good is "JUICY". google them.

One more thing I wanted to say was you don't need volume for a mic'd amp to sound good. I did a recording with a SM57 mic'd Peavey Vintage 30 on the overdriven channel at very moderate volume, and I thought it sounded nice and big. I have a friend who's owned a full time studio for over 25 years, and he's often remarked about mic'ing small amps can sound huge. In his studio big amps wide open are usually a pain... That interaction of the mic and the speaker must be the key...amp size and volume seem to be secondary. One quick story on that subject...a band from my younger daze who is still touring, albeit with only one original member, Wishbone Ash, came out with their "There's The Rub" album, and the bass tone was terrific. The bassist Martin Turner was asked who he'd gotten that tone. Martin always used a Gibson Thunderbird through big tube amps onstage...well he said that he used a Fender Precision bass through a Pignose amp, remember those little things? I think they still make them... My main point is that a lot of volume isn't necessary...and that a mic'd amp is still the best, but a direct modeling device is not all that terrible...

JWH - As you can see you opened up a whole can of worms. +1 to what everyone said. Because they are all good options. I have guitar rig 4, which I think is "good", and a POD toneport gx (doesn't work in W7), and a 50w tube head which is full of tone obviously, with a Les Paul. A "decent guitar sound" is pretty subjective. You might want to be a little more specific. You may want to mention the style/genre, and maybe even something like "I want a sound like .......(insert artist or song)........."
Sonar, Les Paul Studio, FTU, puter, plugs.........

Hi everyone thanks for your input, guitardog247 you,re correct in saying a guitar sound is subjective the type of songs I am writing are british indie type so this is the kind of sound I am lookng for I used to get decent sounds from my portastudio (Zoom mrs1608 16 track ) and I guess I am looking to emulate the kind of sounds that I had before moving on to my Sonar system again thanks for the input I have only had my system since the middle of December so any advice would be greatly appreciated cheers jwh

Brett If you guys with your lovely amps want a laugh check this out. Yeah it looks ridiculous but in some contexts sounds quite good. Just don't tell anyone! http://www.flickr.com/pho...set-72157612923069631/ When I was a kid I figured out how to turn my brother's portable transistor radio into an amp. It had a nice distortion to it and really sounded awesome for it's size. We used it instead of his real amp because it sounded better.
