Decisions decisions...

OK, as I've posted, I got a shiny new lappy with 2X USB 3.0 ports. The OEM HDD is  500 GB 5400rpm. I'm gonna need more space for my samples and libraries. My dilemma is this: Should I replace it with a Seagate(Momentus) 750 GB 7200rpm and install libraries and programs all on there? -or- keep it for programs, etc., and buy an external 3.0 USB HDD for my samples and libraries? Is USB really as fast as internal 7200 rpm hard drives?

A fast 3.5" HD in a quality USB 3.0 enclosure will yield over 100MB/Sec sustained.
That's definitely faster than any 2.5" internal (conventional) HD.

The Momentus delivers 3GB/sec data transfer.

FWIW, Don't confuse bus speed/bandwidth with the HD's speed.
I guarantee the Seagate sustains nowhere near 3GB/Sec.

A high performance 3.5" HD in a good USB 3.0 external enclosure will be faster than any 2.5" internal conventional HD.

Good to know. I always like to keep my data drive discreet from my program drive. I'll prolly get the Seagate anyway just cause I like a faster drive in there anyway.

What about those new ultra-portable, external 2.5", USB 3.0 drives? Will they be "good enough" for audio streaming? iow- will the increased transfer rate (5GB/s) compensate for the slower spindle speed(5400rpm)?
