Decluttering...what to do with music mags?

Having a big old clear out this year. Need to downsize the house in the next year or so.

The vinyl's gone, the cassettes are gone, so are the VHS tapes. Still got hundreds of music mags, 'Q', 'Mojo' 'The Face' etc, going back to the early '90's. What the heck am I going to do with them? Can't face EBay, it'll turn into a nightmare ('item doesn't match description, half the crossword was filled in' )

I'm 6 miles from 'Scotland's Book Town' but none of the bookshops want them, even for free. Are they headed for a landfill?

Libraries might be interested in having them or colleges/uni's with music programs.

You could also put them up as a lot on ebay essentially just to get the cost of shipping covered and some nerdo would likely give them a good home.

I too hate seeing material like that just go to a landfill.

edit: Sorry... missed the part about not wanting to deal with ebay but you just put it up for 99c (or I guess pence) "AS IS" with something in your description just stating you don't want them in the garbage and don't really care about making money.

Some studios might like to have them for reading material in the crapper too. Maybe they'll let you look at/play with the shiny knobby things while you're there and/or you can make some new music friends.

I'm actually not familiar with those mags so maybe I'm mistaken in thinking they are "recording" related. Perhaps more music culture mags.

Still good stuff for libraries or any music nerdy places. I love reading old mags of any kind. It's a cool peek into the past. Even just the ads are interesting to me. I'm weird like that though.

I think that's what James is attempting but without letting them go to waste.

When I was a little snerpwapper various family members would give me subscriptions to Guitar World/Guitar Player. I cannot for the life of me recall what the heck happened to those collections but lately I've been kind of wanting to check out all those moldy oldies... if just to compare how I viewed the content back then and how I view it now.

Good point Glyn, I could get them to a recycling centre without too much trouble. Still seems a shame though.

I tried to make a scrap book. Went through all the old mags and cut out the stuff that could be useful down the road. Those tabs and tech articles went into a file folder and the rest went to recycle. I have about 150 lbs of schematics in boxes that I'm trying to sort. As I get them in PDF, I get rid of the hard copy. I'll be dead before the pile is gone.

Secondary loft installation, then if you suddenly need to read one you know where they are.  It is an alternative recycling, it is re-purposing.

James,

It's a tough thing to deal with finding your mags a new home since you valued these mags enough to save them.

FWIW, I find it hard sometimes to accept in my life that some of the things that have given me joy and an outlet for passing my time creatively are not things that other people value .

good luck ,

Hi,

I've gone over some of the mags I have and pulled out the articles worth having and dumped the rest. I mean, c'mon, you look at keyboard magazine and you find 3 lines about Tangerine Dream, and 50 pages about a cheap second rate keyboard player ... it's just wrong on so many levels musically! Same with the Bass Player and Bass Magazine.

Music is not about notes and chords! My poem is not about the computer or monitor or letters! It's about how I was able to translate it from my insides!

I wish I still had my issues of Sounds/NME/Record Mirror (maybe even a few Melody Makers) from around mid '76 up until around '80/'81-ish.

I occasionally look up back copies from that period of time on eBay, and I can remember every cover.

I suppose it's more the memories of reading them, and the associated good times, rather than the actual content, that creates that 'feeling' in me though.

I'm almost done with a major declutter myself. There has been some stuff that probably has some value to someone, but I just don't have the time to market it. I took the easy way and just chucked it out. If I hadn't looked for it or at it for a year, it went out. I found a complete set of PA speaker cables that I hadn't used in over 10 years, among other stuff like that.

On a side note, I just had new oak floors put in my studio room. Beautiful! I'm building an oak guitar rack based on a design I saw, and doing an entire re-do of the room. I want a nice clean, uncluttered space. Pics to follow completion.

Hi,

Not bad ... been improving in that department ... about 30 more LP's will move out this week ... and I cleared up some more stuff on my website, as I still have 190 film reviews to add to the website (already at 215 or so) ... and then I will work on cleaning up the write ups I have on my 2 novels ... with printouts all over the place with errata and such.

All the poetry is on the computer, just not on the website.

All my short stories are on the website.

All my novels WON'T be on the website. But they will be cleaned up and ready to go. One of them for sure. The 2nd might not make it. The 3rd is an unknown. There is a 4th brewing that is written in my head (first time I ever did that, btw!!!), almost all the way to the end.

After that ... it doesn't matter to me! But I think I will be into music quite a bit more than I am now.

I had a collection of more than 12 years of Guitar Player Magazine.  It was complete.

I had considered the library but they didn't really act excited and would have put them in a back room in the basement where no one would have known they were there.

I sold it on E-bay and even made some money on it.
