Decrease Midi Notes Volume in Piano Roll - Sonar X2
How do I decrease the volume for midi notes while using the piano roll while using Sonar 2? I used to know how to do this and but have forgotten. I use Sonar X2 about once every 6 months and I'm always forgetting how to do things. I know I place my mouse over the midi note and pull down in some manner but for some reason it's not working. Could someone refresh my memory? Thanks. Also if I remember correctly, there's not a way to change the volume on all midi notes at once? That would be nice.

And to reduce or increase velocity of the whole track use the slider in the box to the left of the track pane(below the volume, pan, etc)

chasmcg...I know I place my mouse over the midi note and pull down in some manner but for some reason it's not working... You've already gotten expert replies from Scott and g_randybrown - I just wanted to add that the technique of finding the sweet spot as you hover over a note, until you see the velocity lines, and then dragging up or down, is a bit of a tricky maneuver that takes practice. I still find it a bit slow-going, so don't use that method very often. An alternate method, and what I find to be the quicker way to edit velocity values is to simply get my cursor over a note's displayed velocity in the velocity pane, and edit it directly. For me, that's faster and more reliable than the hovering to find the sweet spot. Do take note that there are methods of changing the relative value of all the notes in a clip or track, as randybrown pointed out, another method being to use the velocity MFX, or the simple Velocity menu item that can change a range of notes by percentage. Another useful tip I learned here not too long ago is there is an option in prefs under MIDI to be able to "audition" the note when dragging the velocity lines up or down...even works with a whole selected block chord...but you gotta hold your mouth just right...it helps if you stick your tongue out and and just slightly to the right ...kinda like this

OK, guys, thanks a lot. Got that working. I think what was throwing me was this. I have a few notes that when I drag them down, at the bottom, the volume line (vertical line) turns red and goes down. But when I release the mouse, the line returns to green and it is still the same height as before. I thought I might have 2 notes there but after deleting it, no note is below it. Has any of you ever seen this? Thanks.

One thing to remember is that if you are working with a velocity sensitive layered patch as you lower the velocity you are also slightly changing the sound of said patch. This may or may not be a problem in your mix.
If it is then bounce to tracks and use the gain control to lower the volume.
The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better. Good point. Velocity isn't the same as volume. As for quickly changing velocity values of multiple notes at once, I use CAL commands that increase/decrease the velocity value by 5 (changing it by just 1, 2 or so doesn't make much difference in sound so I always increase/decrease it by 5). I assigned the commands to Ctrl+Alt+NumPad"+" and Ctrl+Alt+Numpad"-" so I just need to select notes and hit either of these keyboard shortcuts. I've just uploaded them here so if you're interested download them and put them in your CAL Scripts folder and then assign whatever keyboard shortcuts you like to them (downloadable for 1 week only): https://box.raksul.com/dl/b566f23ffe38187feb6a0b80e21aba15 chasmcg I think what was throwing me was this. This happens if you're selecting notes that are in two or more clips that are linked to each other (clips with dotted outlining). You only need to select notes in one of these linked clips and then drag the velocity down. And the most important advice is to make notes . Use Excel and create a table that lists features you're likely to forget often, and use filtering so it's easy to search (I do it and has many items in the table particularly because I use two daws). Hope that helps
