Dedicated tools for bass?

I'm looking for a tool dedicated to EQ, tone, compression, etc for bass guitar, anyone know of such a thing?

Thanks - rev

There's like 1,000 of them.

Depending on your need for flexibility and total control vs. getting something that makes everything super user easy you have different paths to investigate.

As far as looking for something easy and sort of all in one for what you're asking, there are several offerings from Waves that have specific "bass" modules with all of those things in one module.

Examples are in the signature series offerings from Waves, such as the Eddie Kramer Signature Series (look at the Eddie Kramer Bass Channel module) or the Maserati, or the JJP Bass module.

Those are a few starting ideas of plugins that have it all nicely combined for you.  If you want more control there are totally different paths to investigate.

Two internal 2TB SSDs laptop stuffed with Larry's deals and awesome tools. Studio One is the cat's meow as a DAW now that I've migrated off of Sonar. Using BandLab Cakewalk just to grab old files when migrating songs.

If you got TH2 with Sonar (any of the lite versions) I think you may qualify for a discounted upgrade price for Overloud MarkII Bass which is supposedly really good.

I could be wrong on that. I got the discount for the full version of TH2 because of my Sonar purchase(s) and I can now get MarkII Bass for significantly less (haven't checked for a while but I think $100).

However you have been here for a while so you may have owned previous versions of Sonar which included GR4 which I think included the BassPro emulation. That has many of the tools you need for bass (multiple band EQ, drive and I think compression but Sonar has better compressors anyway you can add on).

I've found though if your DI bass signal is good enough you can do a lot with it using the basic Sonar tools without a sim. Cloning the DI track three times and setting up one track to bring focus on the ultra low rumble, the second for click attack and a third to add drive... then blending them together can get a pretty good sound for all sorts of stuff. This is all using the Quadcurve EQ, two stage compression and the Tube Sat/Softube Sat modules. FX Bin/Rack stuff can help it all along (like using a guit sim for your drive channel).

Getting a good bass sound from a dry signal is actually pretty easy. Getting it to sit in the mix is the hard part and there are a LOT of factors to that.

If you wanted DIY you could provide more details of what you need and I'm sure the smart fellows here could give you ideas (or try the Techniques subforum).

Cheers.

BTW... the GR BassPro is modeled after an Ampeg SVT Pro series amp. Anyone who has played through one in real life knows these are very flexible. The sim version, based on your input signal, will require a little help but you do get a massive amount of sound sculpting options for bass within the model itself. Check it out and you may save yourself some money.

Cheers.

One wellknown and liked is Waves Renaissance Bass(RBass) or MaxxBass which has same technology but more options(but also a bit more difficult to master).

I also like Waves VEQ4 - which is just a EQ really, but can be driven nicely to get good clean or distorted like amped sound - even from a lined bass.

As always, Waves stuff you only buy on campaigns and preferably at retailers like AudioDeluxe. RBass is quite often on discount by itself, but Maxx Bass and VEQ series and 30 other plugins are in Gold bundle - which quite often is down below $300-350. If that never is in your budget, look through what might be worth waiting for.

EZ Mix 2 (Toontrack) has a lot of presets for bass (as well as presets for a lot of other things)—although my personal main use for EX Mix is kick drum and master bus compression.

Guitar Rig is pretty hard to beat.

There are four CA-X Series bass amps included with Artist, Professional, and Platinum. Might as well start with those, they're free and pretty much "plug and play."

However you're giving me an idea for some more pedalboards, similar to the ones for guitar in Dorchester

If you're gonna do that, Craig... maybe include a three staged version? As in one hones and dials the low, one dials in pick and one dials in growl... then each gets tossed on a clone as needed (and instructions on how to use all three)?

Of course single track solutions are ideal but I'm not sure if that set up would work on one track.

Just a thought.

Cheers.

Edit: Or of course there could be one track and three busses. Whatevers. Same thing.

Re: Dedicated tools for bass? 2015/05/16 15:48:25 (permalink)
Hi,
Studio Devil was a while ago in partnership with Sonar and they offer good tools for thickening a bass track.
The virtual bass amp costs around 70 bucks and gives instant results, there ´s also a more sophisticated tool which is called Virtual Bass Amp Pro but it costs more and I'm not aware if it can pull the sound to the next level.
Anyway with a proper DI Virtual Bass amp gives good results.
On another hand I recently got a small DI from Eden, they call it:"World Tour D I"so according to the name one should be able to play all over the World with it ,but it gives good results though according to me it is better if you can split the signal so you can have a dry track and the other one coming through this little box.
The other option ,like mentioned above, can be to record a well played clean track (through the proper DI) and take time with classical Eqs and comps to get the sound you're looking for.
Cheers.

Maybe this will work for you, the CLA bass plugin:

I do not have this one but I do have the CLA drum version and it is very useful.

The reason people say the vinyl sounds better is because the music was better.

CLA Bass is very good. Especially if you're a relative novice and like some good tweakable starting points. Not saying it's only for the novice but it's super useful especially if you don't already have a bunch of favorite comps and EQs lined up.

Re: Dedicated tools for bass? 2015/05/16 17:05:20 (permalink)
It really would be quite helpful if you described what kind of bass sounds/style of music you are after (and perhaps if you described your gear a bit too).

We're all kind of piling on the options (and really... some fine stuff is being recommended by smart/talented people) but it could save you some time if the answers were a little more... uh... tailored to your needs.

However you'll notice a lot of  "Ampeg" type sims being mentioned. Anything you get you may want to see if there are Ampeg models in there. Of course there are a lot of good bass amp manufacturers in the world but Ampeg stuff is pretty standard and sounds good on a wide range of styles... therefore good Ampeg models will likely serve you well in a virtual environment.

Don't forget though sampled bass is actually a really nice sounding and convenient option. Bass isn't like guitar or other instruments that really require the human touch (in most scenarios). I play bass and track all my bass tracks but now with the ARA MIDI conversion via Melodyne I'm really liking the method of tracking my bass part, converting to MIDI then blending in or replacing the audio with sampled bass. Those samples generally sound better than anything I could record/dial in with my modest gear and novice engineering skills.

Unless there are a lot of slides or crazy pop/slap stuff it works out great. There is a bit of clean up that needs to be done to the MIDI track because the ARA conversion is never perfect but it doesn't take long to fix things up. If you are dropping the audio track altogether (instead of blending) it's even easier because you can just use quantize or move notes without trying to match up witht he original.

Just trying to give you ideas... and this works quite nicely IMO. It also ain't really cheating because you actually played the parts anyway.... yanno just in case you insist on performing things like I try to.

Cheers.

Re: Dedicated tools for bass? 2015/05/16 17:50:49 (permalink)
Also, are we talking about a "real" bass recorded directly into the console, or a bass sample library?

I don't find that I need compression on sample libraries although a limiter can give the bass a subtly different (and cool) sound. (Bass with Limiter is one of the few bass presets I use in EX Mix.)  I do find EQ very important—especially a high pass filter and slight midrange boost—and do that by hand in the Pro Channel.  I usually rely on a plug-in preset when using parallel distortion because I don't normally get it right myself.

Not to keep pitching the Native Instrument Scarbee basses for Kontakt, but the Rick bass comes with some great presets that don't need much further tweaking.

Overload Mark Studio. 100 bucks right now which is a great price for what it does.  I no longer use any EQ on bass and get the sound entirely from Mark Studio using the amp tone controls, different mic and cabinets to get a tone that sits in the mix. I do use Waves Bass Rider which helps even things out. If you're after a great bass tone, Mark Studio is awesome.

Peace!

Just took a look. That's actually the upgrade price for TH2 full owners (which is a decent discount). Not sure what price TH2 Sonar/Producer owners would get. Perhaps the same (which would be nice for those who don't have the full version but kind of disappointing for those of us that did upgrade).

For the full version (non upgrade) it seems to be $129 right now. Not bad considering it's usually $150. Not an insane deal but from what I've heard and based on my experience with TH2 certainly worth it.

Unfortunately still not in a position to snag the discounted upgrade myself right now but it's good to see it going for a manageable price.

Cheers.

Hey Beepster,

I was referring to Mark Studio, not TH2.  the Cakewalk store is selling it for 99 bucks right now.  That's not an upgrade price.  I think it's a good value if you can swing it!

So was I. If you look at the Overloud link their upgrade sale price for MarkII is $99 for TH2 owners.

However I did just look in the Cake store and it does indeed seem to be offering the same price for the full version (with no mention of an upgrade). I can't be certain because it's giving me the price in Canadian dollars ($127) but I think that is about right for the currrent exchange rate.

So yeah... looks like Cake is selling it cheaper than Overloud is. Good find.

Cheers.

Mark2, GK2, Studio Devil are also very good, you may also like to try Ignite Amps SHB-1 (which is free) and couple it with some of Rosen Digitals Bass Cab impulses ($8 each) which will give you some very decent sounds.

All these things are included in Sonar. Did you try them out? If you did try them out, why don't you like the sound you got. Most times its because you started out with a lousy bass sound or you are not using the tools you have correctly. Buying more of the same is a waste of money and it wont solve your issue

I do hard rock and metal, so I got Audio Assault Bass Grinder. It's pretty good for metal bass. There's also Cerberus from Kuassa which seems great for anything. For free, there is TSE's B.O.D., which is a Sansamp clone. One thing I STRONGLY recommend is Studio Devil's Virtual Bass Amp, or Virtual Bass Amp Pro. I have Pro and LOVE it. Extremely flexible.

I just recently broke down and bought a Darkglass B7K as I'm getting more into hardware. I was broke for a bit after that, too. lololol
